Basic thread for the discussion of the greatest live performances you've seen or would have loved to have seen.
I've been present at many live gigs but I don't think any of the performances match either of the nominations that I have below.......
My two nominations - neither of which I was present at but both of which I'd give a right leg to have seen.
Iron Maiden - 1992 at Donnington- Would have loved to have been there for the whole festival - Hallowed Be Thy Name is good but this is something else - have seen Miaden since live but don't think they ever match this,

Queen - Their Live aid set. Considering there were no sound checks, it sounded excellent. Utterly goosebumps stuff.

I've seen some good gigs in my time, but would have to nominate Simple Minds at Croke Park (not actual footage)

Friday at Reading Fest '78 (The Jam, The Pirates, Sham 69)

The Ramones, Essex University SU, '80.
I wish I'd seen Dr.Feelgood with Wilko Johnson.

Only group I've ever walk out on, Manchester Apollo way back, they where cr*p.Greatest gig I've ever been to was Queen at Wembley 1986 and I am just in the video form it, can't remember where as it's been years since I watched it.
All Rammstiens gigs I've ever been to have been brilliant and they better be next month too.
Just wish i had been a little bit more sober to remember it all,Donnington 91,ACDC.

In terms of the best live performance I have witnessed then it's one of the following:
EMF - Cambridge Corn Exchange, 29 September 1992. Bonkers. Didn't stop leaping about like a loon from the opening bars until they finished.
Tackhead - Reading Festival, 1989. Spacemen 3 finished and it rained but these guys were great. Tight, on the ball and their cover version of "The Bomb" was teh awesome.
New Order - Reading Festival, 1989. The press had been full of stories about NO breaking up. Took to the stage and Barney shout's "We're New Order and we're satying together!" the crowd goes mental and we get an hour's set of genius.
Sisters of Mercy - Reading Festival, 1991. The Sunday had been a great day with Loop providing a great set to lie back in the sun and chill out to ("Burning World" was sublime) and The Godfathers giving us 45 minutes of besuited anthems. But! The Sisters stole the day, taking us through "Vision Thing" and all of the hits. The Eldritch / James / Bricheno / Bruhn line-up heavying up the Sisters sound. Unforgettable.
Peter Hammill - Cambridge Corn Exchange 1989. I managed to get a seat, front row, dead centre opposite Peter's piano and was treated to 90 minutes or so (I can't really remember-it all went by so fast) of some of his greatest music revisited. Accompanied by John Ellis on guitar some of the tracks got quite heavy. None of his other gigs have been as good.
Of the performances I have on record and wished I'd been able to see:
Pink Floyd - Pompeii 1972. At the top of their game and before the rot of real success set in. Gloriously DSOTM-free and Gilmour is on fire on "Echoes".
Tangerine Dream - Place Des Arts Montreal, 1977. TD give up trying to be arty in front of a stadium full of stoned americans and just make 2 hours of extremely heavy sequence-led electronics with slabs of guitar.
King Crimson - Providence Rhode Island, 1974. 3 years before TD, King Crimson also gave up subtelty in the face of a huge, american, chemically altered audience and went 'balls out' heavy. This concert is heacy metal for people who like to think about it and cemented Fripp a place in the guitar god heaven.
Can - Any concert from 68-73. When Can played live, they were unstoppable, funky and unpredictable. Don't believe me, check out "Spoon Live" on youtube.
