No brainer - miss out on PSE and you will regret it.

PSE all the way.

But there must be something swaying you to the other car or I doubt you'd be asking the question smile

What he said!
I had PSE fitted on my 996C2 after I bought it. Cost me £1,500 approx 5 years ago. Would now probably cost £2,500+ to retro fit! Everyone who has it will tell you you'll wish you had if you don't smile
If both cars are a similar price/mileage/condition then it's a no brainer!!

All things being equal I'd choose the one with PSE. I can't see any reason why you wouldn't? But in reality I'd choose the one that's in the best overall condition with the most options that you prefer.

What does the other have that is making you even think about this? If its something you cannot retrofit offer 1k less for it as you have to add a PSE

The 996 PSE is one of the best PSEs Porsche have ever done - totally transforms the character and quality of the 996, with or without the switch. But as said above, it can be retro-fitted, so buy the best car first.

I was always happy with the sound of the standard exhaust until I drove one with PSE, would always want it now.

As above, it's an expensive retrofit.

Also this. Had it retrofitted to my Cayman S after umm'ing and ahh'ing for a bit. Now I can't imagine driving it without it.

Whichever has the best condition/service history/spec. If it's the 996 without the PSE then get a "gundo hack" exhaust bypass done for £300-400. I don't think you need to spend an additional £2000 - 3000 to have a switch that turns the sound off!!!

I think on the 996 it is mandatory, all 996's out of warranty now though so if you can live without the switch then get Gurt to fit his mufflers or get them sent to your local indi garage for 450 Euros - Carnewal.com - by all accounts they sound almost the same for 10% of the cost, you'd be mad to spend £4k on the PSE which is near identical. Even if you want to keep the car standard for when you sell, just keep the old mufflers & put back on.

That's a no-brainer.

But you've said "is it worth the difference", without saying what the difference is.

All else being equal, definitely take the one with PSE, but it can be retro-fitted so don't compromise on condition and more important spec items (colour, etc) just to get PSE.

£4k ???

I had one fitted back in 2003 by my OPC for £1,500 (no switch, but not necessary IMO)

PSE is great. When I am on the phone (hands free of course) and you hit the loud pedal it always gets a response from the other person. So PSE can be heard for miles. On the other hand when I leave early in the morning I can switch it off in order not to wake too many neighbours.

On the other hand how long does a PSE last, do they rust through and then what do we do assuming the engine is still in good order? I have never read about having to replace a PSE or at least parts of it.

PSE = Happiness

Buy the best car and spend some money having the exhaust bypass hack done. (It's only a simple job of welding a small pipe between the inlet and outlet on the silencer box)

Many good Indys can do this. No point retrofitting the genuine Porsche system for 10 times the cost only to achieve the same sound.

Apart from the initial 'bark' when you start up, keeping the revs below 2500 will keep you neighbour friendly without the need for a mute switch
