Hope this is a reasonable place to post this. Getting married in the summer and likely to drive down through France/ Italy for the honeymoon, we'd like to take our 18 year old Toyota MR2 turbo.

<<<awaiting being thrown out of thread under definition of classic car>>>

Problem is we cannot find any acceptable quotes for roadside assistance or recovery. In particular all polices that will cover an 18 year old car seem to limit recovery to the book value of the car which is not high on these (approx 1k; although trying to find one in as good unmolested condition with an LSD for 3 times the book value would be hard).

Surely there must be some company that deals with a similar case? Search engine not helpful at moment so sorry if this question has been asked before!

Any help appreciated!

look around to get classic car insurance that includes in the (usually very low) premium agreed valuation and UK and European Breakdown recovery

try - during office hours - ringing, not texting or look at web site Peter James for a start - http://www.peterjamesinsurance.co.uk/

Problem is can't do classic insurance as it's my other half's daily driver and she has to have business mileage on it (even though minimal). Will get her to try the other link tomorrow, thanks!

have you asked, don't know about business mileage unless it's to varying places of work but daily drive vehicle is no problem - insurance for a classic doesn't have to be restictive it's only the old farts or show vehicles that need the car in a locked garage out of daylight on a 1,000 mile per year policy

a lot of agreed values under say £12-15,000 would be self assessed too

that why you have to ring and talk to them to asked and check answers

I asked "how much extra for unlimted mileage instead of 5,000 miles?" - they said "same premium" - I said "I'll have unlimted mileage then please", it was that easy I just asked

also worth checking if the insurance covers recovery in the event of an "off" that is your fault , you'd be surprised at the way some insurances only cover you for the very basics leaving you stranded , it pays to think of all scenarios.

In the past I have purchased the AA five star european cover, its a very comprehensive package with an english speaking phoneline to call, its typically about £11 a day for an old car.

In 2006 they brought my Healey home from northern Spain, unmarked, it arrived home before we did, it was on the drive, they collected us, took us to a hire car depot, we did 2500 miles in the hire car at left it at Le Havre, taxied us home. Great service.

Thanks for all the replies, very helpful. Unfortunately car needs to be insured to multiple places of work unless she can find a permanent job.

Now search engine working again, found a discussion about ADAC:

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Seems like the T & C 's state won't cover you if you are in a car over a certain age (although my German is non-existant). The AA 5 star package mentioned only covers you for recovery up to their market value of the car... which if they say is 1k I doubt would get it back to the UK. Any other suggestions or should we just go in the Skoda (assuming it's reunited with it's engine successfully?)
