My front wheels are a little pitted and I was planning to have them powder coated. In conversation with a friend today who sells aftermarket wheels mentioned that the difficulty with powder coating is the stone chipping and he recommended having them prepared and painted only. Anyone here had any issues with powder coating?

Thanks

I've had many of sets of wheels re-finished over the years and imo wet painting is by far the better finish.

I have a set of rims on my track car that were powder coated about 3 years ago and have had no problems with them despite getting hot enough to crack a couple of sets of discs.

Powder coat generally melts at 160c or higher, it is a thermosplastic afterall, I've seen it on wheels used for trackdays where the centers have melted away, so its not complete bks.

Depends on the use & I am aware there are powder coats that melt at higher temps, so if you do it might be worth asking.

To be more accurate the powder coating will soften with the heat generated on track days and the wheel nuts or bolts can become loose. If the mating surface of the wheel and the wheel bolt areas are masked off all is well. The same goes for brake calipers. You'll find that a lot of the wheel silvers are powder coated then wet spray lacquered afterwards.
