Problems in work...
Discussion
Bit of a strange one...
I work 7.30-5 and have recently bought my first house with my partner. The house is 13 miles from work and the commute is through a potential trouble spot for traffic.
Before putting an offer in on our house, we did some test runs to the house during rush hour (leaving at 5) and didn't get there until 6.10pm (13 miles!!!).
Now we tried it at 4 and got home at 4.20. I asked if I could work through my lunch hour and leave at 4 and it was agreed, "Not a problem" they told me.
Today, 13 members of staff have signed a petition stating that the decision is 'Unfair & discrimination'. I'm really upset that the other staff have been this petty but it is worrying me. We have someone who can stay with our dog for a while during the day but the extra hour/hour and a half after would not be fair on the dogs etc... and I don't want to hit that traffic everyday.
Can my bosses reject the petition with no come back or will I have to just do the same hours as everyone else?

Ouch. I'd be jealous too if someone else started and was able to leave an hour early by "working" through lunch. A lot of people eat at their desk and effectively work through their lunch hour anyway so I can understand why they'd feel aggrieved. Presumably this option wouldn't be available to everyone or the office would have to shut an hour early as everyone would probably take it.
However I'd have thought a petition won't carry any weight if the boss is happy with his decision.
Very awkward situation though.

I know it may seem unfair to some but it was agreed by two directors. We asked them whether we should disregard the house or come to some arrangement.
People take full lunch hours etc... but we get here at 7.15am so before anyone else and we had no idea anyone had a problem with it. I am 'Manager' of our web sales team and our tiny team of 4 sit at our desks all day. My team don't care, they are just happy for me that we got the house we wanted. I work the same amount of hours as everyone else so don't see why it bothers them.
I wish I could take the dogs to work, would be wonderful! Unfortunately, I think you all may be right and I will need to look for someone else. It is sad though, been here 4 years and the staff have never really caused me any issues.

A petition is irrelevant - what they need to do is submit a grievance. This sets out exactly what their complaint is. "Discrimination" suggests that (they feel) you have been trested more favourably than them under the exact same circumstances.I work 7.30-5 and have recently bought my first house with my partner. Basically its between them and your Employer. If they can work the same hours as you do without any operational impact they should be allowed to do so. If the Employer can demonstrate why they cannot then they should STFU.
Slightly O/T but, AIUI, an employee MUST have a minimum break of 20 minutes every six hours. I suppose the Employer can treat it as a paid break but it must be a break.
Are you sure that's all they're miffed about?
Seems rather extreme (I suppose this could be 13 out of 2000 people), but people are obviously more put out than the usual digs and grumbling that such flexible hours might be expected to provoke (we have a bloke who goes home at 4:30 every day he's in the office - I guess he works the rest of his hours at home, not my problem).
I guess the issue will be whether your employers believe this is an issue they care about - Are you worth keeping more than the people raising the petition (does seem an odd approach, I concede)?
If not, I guess you'll be asked to work the same hours as the others. An alternative would be to suggest flexible hours for all and clocking in/out - I wouldn't be surprised if your disgruntled co-workers suddenly thought it wasn't such a great idea!

The thing I am finding hard to understand is that our department is completely seperate from our 'shop'. We have less than 50 workers here at this branch but as I said, only 4 in our department.
We are manned seperately and our holidays are considered seperately. During 4-5 there are still 2 members of staff in our office doing the same tasks we all do all day.
If I go at 4, it doesn't impact the shops functions but if the girls from the cash desk left at 4, there would be nobody to accept money/process sales. If our warehouse staff left at 4 and a delivery arrived, there would be no fork-lift users or warehouse staff to accept the goods.
Our department have no impact on anything outside our office.

If you don't need to be there for the business to function and they do it really is just tough luck and they need to deal with it or improve their skillset so that they can obtain the privelege of working flexible hours.
People in our office come and go like you wouldn't believe, I am still here so that I can have a lie in til 12 and then work from home tomorrow afternoon as I just got back from hols this morning and came straight to the office from the airport which has tired me out slightly...
