Can anyone tell me anything about this car?

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2947160.htm

Looks nice in the pictures but I don't know anything about these older Porsches. If I get that far I will of course get a PPI but would appreciate any history or advice from the Porsche gang first if possible.

What kind of questions do I need to ask the owner?

Cheers

Hi,
I'm at work so have to be brief. I don't know the car but questions on cars like this pop up on here from time to time. There was a thread last year that would be useful to you but I'm on my phone so can't find it.

Anyway, quick list of things.
As always, rust, rust, rust. Could be lovely on top but you need to check. If you're not experienced google where to look, or I'm sure someone else will tell you soon.

I don't know about the targa to convertible conversion, but I'm guessing they're the same shell, so it's just a case of removing the rear screen? Again more knowledgeable people will explain.

You want to know -
Are the turbo wings/arches steel (as factory) or fiberglass copies.

Is the car using Turbo suspension wishbones/driveshafts (as factory) for the wider track, or just huge spacers to move the wheels out in the arches. The latter kills handling.

Has it had engine/gearbox rebuilt? When and by who. Does it leak oil.

There are things like snapped headstuds to watch for. A ticking sound under acceleration that sounds like blown exhaust manifold is often audible.

Photos of the conversion would be nice.

In all honesty it's a bitsa with a very limited market but if it has been done properly and you like it then it could provide summer fun. The price isn't bad if it's a good car. Anything under £10k for a 911 gets you a dog so £11k or £12k for a clean straight car isn't bad going really.
Just remember if you need to get out of it quickly to free up the cash, it could take a bit longer than an original spec car to sell. smile

Don't know that car particularly, but its a long way from original spec. - body mods, engine swap, later fuel injection etc. Will need carefully inspecting by someone who really knows impact bumper cars IMHO. Could be lovely, could be an absolute horror - only a really good inspection will tell you. Targa body shares much with convertible, so conversion not necessarily a problem. If you like it, go and have a look... then get someone else to check it over, carefully and proceed with due caution. Re-sale could be tricky as already mentioned - movement steering further towards original cars rather than bitsas, so bear that in mind. Good luck.

I can't reach the link for some reason, but the targa conversion means you'd have to get it engineered for aus.

Forget it.

And don't get too influenced by the "68,000 miles".

Mentally stick a 2 in front and see if you still like it.

As has been said already its one of those cars you would have to see to comment on. Pretty much everything has been changed and at over 30 years old she's been around a bit.

That would worry me a lot, it was an SC targe, and is now a convertable Turbo body. A turbo badge with non turbo engine, that's one crime alone.

I am not sure what would be involved in making a targa into a cab, where does the rigidity come from.

It looks nice in the photos and is reasoanbly cheap, but I would worry about being able to sell a dogs diner. You really need to know who has done that work.

If it was just the turbo arches, then not a problem as it is a popular conversion, but mmmmm.

I think you'd have to approach it as a kit car, it's had so many modifications. The 3.2 engine is not original either. It's not the sort of thing I would go anywhere near personally, but if you do then you need to find out who carried out all the mods as a starting point. Also best to sign up on the impactbumpers forum and ask there. Someone on there might well know the actual car and its history. Impossible to comment on the quality of the car or the price until inspected closely and history examined.

If you subcribe to the 'originality is best' mantra - ie built and maintained as it left the Factory, then best avoided.

If, as said above, you don't mind a hybrid/bitza/kitcar, then fair enough, but IMO it will always be stigmitised.

You remove the rear glass screen and fit a folding convertible hood - simples. smile Rigidity is the same as a factory convertible.

That sounds a lot more like it. "303 riflebolt like in its action (re: 915 gearbox)". Yeah right! More like Massey Ferguson if you ask me, but all part of the old school 911 charm.

Might have got a bit carried away! But it has been refreshed and is genuinely better than the G50 box in my previous car.

All of the above
Run fast, then get faster and hide.

Dogs dinner.
Spend a little bit more and get a proper genuine 911
