Another What DSLR

After seeing the results from my friends Canon EOS 1000d, I have decided to purchase my first DSLR. I dont want to spend a massive amount of money, hopefully £500 approximately including a lens or two.
I have checked on the Canon ebay store and Im still not sure what I should be looking for. These all seem to be reasonable can you help me decide, or can you suggest something different. Thanks

I dont think this has an IS lens so would I be better going for this one?

But it doesnt say if it has an EF-S lens, or are all they EF-S lenses? Sorry but I am a bit confused.

I was also thinking about getting this lens would you recommend it?

The 55-250 is ace.

All the 18-55's are EF-S dont worry as the 1100d and 500d etc all take EF and EF-S lenses.


The IS kit lens is MUCH better than the old non IS one and worth extra.

www.camerapricebuster.co.uk should be your bible for finding good prices. It only shows UK sellers.
You have to be a little careful, if you buy from outside the UK you'll end up with no warranty on the body - there are lots of places selling stuff from Hong Kong for example - some good, some not. Probably one of the best known is DigitalRev, who (like others) claim to offer a third party warranty. Another one is HDEW Cameras.

I'm not saying don't buy from an import shop - just be aware of what you are buying.

IS on the lens is worth having.

Either EF or EF-S lenses fit the lower end cameras like the cameras you are looking at, they don't fit the high end full frame cameras (like a 5D or 1D) - they only take EF lenses.

55-250 lens is a bargain, they are a great lens.

ETA: Some of the foreign shops send the camera direct from abroad, which may attract customs/vat fees. DigitalRev claim to prepay this and if you do get charged upon receipt will refund you.

I'm surprised it's showing the Canon 55-250 IS II at £170 on there though, it's been at the £135 mark for a few weeks. Not sure how current the rest of the range is, that's just the first one I looked at.

ETA:

And a well rated seller on Amazon is selling it new for £130. Saving an extra fiver is never a bad thing.

I was in the same boat last week. I ended up getting the 500D kit for the Canon Outlet. Been playing with it all last night and got some really good advice from the people here.
