Good shout, Asterix.
It often amazes me how often politicians are discredited and "resign" only to reappear a few months later: Mandleson obviously (twice, IIRC), Archer and Salmond spring to mind. Unbelievable!
When was Salmon majorly discredited? I remember him quitting, but I thought it was from internal party politics and complaints about his leadership. The closest to being caught with his hand in the cookie jar that I can think of was his pledge (I think- can't find a source right now) to quit Westminster or stop drawing his salary, I forget, if he became First Minister? Overall I totally agree, though. I can only assume that guys who keep comming back must have dirt on everyone and thus present too big a danger to their peers to risk upsetting them. Keith Vaz is another one!
Mandleson has only ever had one interest in life. Himself.
Having said that I did find the appointment of Mandleson by Gordon Brown to his administration, very interesting given the intense dislike and utter distrust, that one had for the other.
Best example of the old phrase, 'keep you friends close and your enemies closer' I can remember. Much good it did him.
Mandleson was probably responsible for the Spin approach to politics in the UK than anyone else. Bliar recognised his ability and used him very effectively.
In any political battle Mandleson would always be an asset to whichever side it suited him to join.
The famous quote which I think was first said about Disraeli by Gladstone 'Too clever by half' strikes me as particularly relevant to Mandelson.
I would not trust him out of sight. But I would not choose him as an enemy.
Too clever by half.

I find it hard to believe that anyone can doubt the integrity of a man who has been enobled after astellar career, which included more ministry's than you can shake a stick at and a big job in Brussels. This is underlined by his resigning from office under a cloud not once but twice. Most of our dodgier political masters won't resign even when caught bang to rights. So three cheers for integrity and the same for Mandy.
Rothschild ought to bew eternally ashamed at ever having to associate with that devious, slimy individual. But then I guess there's the rumours about why Brown sold off our gold cheap...
The only one who appears to come out of this untainted is Deripaska. I'm sure he was in it purely for the money and would not pretend otherwise.

If only there was some indication from Mandelson's past that he was dodgy. Keir Starmer investing yet more political capital in supporting someone else who will inevitably be forced out is certainly a look.
Regardless of his policies, have we ever had a less politically astute prime minister? I'm, struggling to think of one.
