I've sort of narrowed it down to

Either a

in alphabetical order ....

Aprilia RSVR (could stretch to the factory) or

Ducati 999 BP or

Fireblade or

MV Agusta F4

Comments / feedback on any of these greatfully recieved.

I'll be one of those dreadful Sunday riders coupled with the occasional track day - and I think it's important to point out I have little or no talent!

It depends what your after, the Italian bikes have so much more character than the japanese, but do require a bit more tlc on your part, if you just want to jump on a bike every sunday I'd probably go for the honda.

Aprilia are currently in the financial shite, and may well end up owned by Ducati btw.

If you want something different stay ways from these:

2004 sales figured to June 04

1. Yamaha R1 1610 units sold
2. Honda CBR1000 893 units sold
3. Aprilia RSV Mille 797 units sold
4. Suzuki GSXR1000 794 units sold
5. Suzuki GSXR750 734 units sold

Nice Shortlist

With the MV do you mean the 750 or the 1000?

If the 1000, my preference would be;

Ducati or MV (would need to try the MV )

Aprilia

Honda

They're all top bikes and personally I like Italian bikes, the MV 1000 looks brilliant (MCN this week say it is the fastest Superbike they have ever tested @ around, IIRC, 185mph ), although I think the 750 is a bit 'limp'.

The 999 is a stonker as is the Aprilia - but the Duke does it for me.

The Fireblade is a top bike also but. IMHO, lacks the Italians 'charm' however it would be more reliable & cheaper to run.

Be aware though that the Ducati would, almost certainly, be the most expensive to run as proper servicing (essential) is expensive due to the complexity of valve adjustment etc.

Regarding talent (or lack of) all these bikes are 'hardcore' superbikes and so require some commitment/cajones etc but bikes like the Ducati will 'flatter' your ability due to it's rock steady handling which may allow you to get away with a bit more than something a bit 'twitchier'.

All IMHO of course.

Whatever you get, enjoy and let us know....

The only concern is what wil happen to Aprillia.

Will someone take them over or could they flounder?

Don't they also own Moto Guzzi?

Either way Aprillia are supposed to be brilliant bikes.

Exint2 - don't take this the wrong way mate, but I'm always worried when people are more motivated by what they ride rather than how they ride.

You have confessed to having little talent, but your shorlist contains some of the most extreme bikes out there. Anyone of which could actually hinder your riding ability as they could be way more capable a bike than you are a rider, and could lead you into hot water.

Have you considered spending £6k on a CBR600, GSX-R600, etc, and some of the rest on putting yourself through something like the California Superbike School? You'll come out a better rider as a result.

Just a suggestion.

What have you ridden previously?

If this is your first big bike then you'll find most of your selections pretty hard going. No point having a 1000cc bike if you're too intimidated to open the throttle.

As has been said before, get a 600. They're plenty fast enough for the road.

Oh, and BTW. I'd get the Aprilia Factory - but then I'm biased.

And I wouldn't expect Aprilia to stay bust for long. Their products are so good and well respected.

From what I hear, the only reason they're in trouble is that they've spent too much - mainly on Moto Guzzi. And, they're Italian - most of their businesses are in some financial trouble or another.

Ok guys I'm coming back to biking after a few of years away and have got a bit "out of the loop" regarding whats good, bad or indifferent in modern bikes" hence the post.

I'm realistic about my 2 wheel talent, (which I think is a good thing) but in the past I've owned a Ducati 851, an 888Sp4 a Bimota SB6, GSXR 750 and a 916 - so I can handle the more powerful end of the market.

- and as you can see I'm drawn to Italian bikes ... but as I do want something I can get on and go every time is the Honda a better bet?? or the RSVR - or will the occasional niggle with the MV / 999 be more than made up for by looking at it in my garage (as I fix it!!)

thought about the GSXR750? You can use most of the power most of the time and you don't need to wind the balls off it like you do on a 600. It also has some of the low down torque of the litre bikes. It's also physically larger than a lot of the current crop of 1000 cc bikes which are smaller than 2-3 yr old 600s?!

I think you missed my second post Diddly!

I passed my test 14 years ago and did at least 70,000 miles on "superbikes" before taking a break.

I have done quite a lot of training in that time - hence my realistic appraisal of my natural talent - however I do know what I'm doing and more importantly am well aware that most other road users do not!

The rsv i reckon because it's real value for money, or then the 999 if you don't mind spending the extra.
How about the 749s?

I had similar thoughts in March this year, however I do use the bike every day, I average about 1,400 miles a month.

I thought about a Ducati but then decided against it because of the niggles and problems you get with them and also the cost of servicing them is quite expensive.

The next bike was the Aprilia RSV Factory, but with Akrapovic cans worked out too expensive about £11.5K.

So the decision was made to buy a new Fireblade, I did have a CBR 600 RR before, so it was kind of a natural progresssion. The bikes been great, apart from the speedo recall thingy, which was found out because my bikes speedo was the first with the problem. Since then the bike has not missed a beat.

I may get an Aprilia Factory next as they do look the dogs danglies.....

Good luck with your choice.

Andy.

Id recommend spending £4k on a second hand bike, and £6k on years of european track days..

the bike wont devalue much, and you will get much more out of it.

Well, I could, but I'm spending it on a MoTEC conversion for the car to try and get 330-ish HP!

Well after much consideration I've bought an MV 750 f4s 1+1 ..(evo3)

After much haggling I got a pretty good deal on a genuine UK bike - If anyone else is intereasted there are good deals on the last few 750s as the factory now ramps up for 1000 cc production and the 750 is effectively discontinued.

Insurance was a problem only because no-one had a listing for the bike! (on the online quotations it is even spelt wrongly!)first quote was for £3500!!! eventually got it down to £950.
