hi, I have booked my flights for our visit to New York, we are going in june for 7 nights.

I was thinking of 4 nights in Manhatten and 3 nights in Brooklyn.

I have found some lovely hotels on the net, so many its mind boggling, I was just wondering if you guys have any recomendations from previous trips.

Cost is not a real issue I just want clean and comfy in a good location without spending a fortune on a penthouse suite. from what I have read hotels in NY can be a bit hit and miss, how much do I need to spend to get what I want

Thanks.

I can't comment on specific hotels as we always do it on a budget, but I wouldn't recommend moving hotels mid-stay personally. We spend a lot of time in Brooklyn (everything from DUMBO to Coney Island), probably half of our average trip time, but we always stay in Manhattan.

$2.50 gets you to Brooklyn from anywhere on the subway system and the express trains don't hang around in getting there, although most evenings we just walked back across Brooklyn Bridge and then got the subway as it's a nice walk.

I'd second that idea to be honest, for the cheapness and ease of getting to Brooklyn I'm really not sure it's worth the hassle of moving hotels.

If budget really isn't an object then staying at the Waldorf Astoria is the way forward, however if you aren't quite posessed of that level of cash then staying in midtown at the Doubletree or downtown in the Embassy Suites is fairly priced and well located for NYC

Thanks guys about the swaping hotels mid stay. I didnt realise it was that cheap to get to brooklyn. Thats good advice. When I say cost not an issue I had a figure of $2500 for 7 nights in a good hotel which I think should be enough ?

When we stayed in NY for NYE 2010 we chose The Library Hotel ( http://www.libraryhotel.com/) which I would highly recommend. Location (Madison Av & 41st), service, cleanliness all great. Would stay there again.

I stayed at Hotel Wellington on 7th Ave. Basic but clean & tidy.

5 mins walk to central park or about the same to times square in the opposite direction. I think there was a bus stop just across the street and subway stations were close.

I can recommend the following
The Helmsley Park Lane (great views of the park large rooms)
The Salisbury (good size rooms, good price)
The intercontinental the Barclay (good location, service)
The Alex (great service, high end but worth it)

thanks, some great hotels there, I like the helmsley park lane smile and the Alex seems very reasonably priced at £1600 for 7 nights, that was booked through a uk travel agent, I will have to call them tomorrow and see if that price included tax.

Been there twice and didnt rate it (relative to cost). (and a JD at the bar was more than a night in a Premier Inn!)

Another vote for The Library here. Standard room is quite small, but I imagine that's common in Manhattan. Overall a good standard with lots of nice touches.

When we got on an express service by mistake a couple of years ago from 5th Avenue it took only 3-4 mins before we realised we had almost crossed Queens

The Waldorf Astoria very often has deals on, and is worth staying in for the history alone.

I'd second the vote for Embassy Suites (it's in the Financial District, close to Ground Zero)

I've been to NYC five times now and stayed there 4

Rooms are great and after a mad day out round the city its quite a quiet area to go back to

Also, free breakfast (a good one!) to set you up for the day and around 5'ish is managers cocktail hour where drinks are free (bar a $ in the tips jar)

Really cant recommend the place high enough

Also 2nd the comments about Brooklyn, so easy to get from Manhattan to Brooklyn it's just not worth swapping hotels

Another recommend is whilst it may seem very cliche, take a few of the tourist bus runs to get tto know the place

Have fun!

(you've made me want to book again, it's a few years since weve been)

Yep another vote for jumping on one of the tour buses, great way of seeing most things on a whistle basis. You can then go back at your leisure and see the bits that interested you at more leisurely pace

Also, ignore all the blx about moody New Yorkers - I found 99% of thhe people I met so welcoming

Even had an incident last time I was there with friends on the Subway from Times Sq to downtown (after tellling them how safe the subway was!) when a dodgy looking large guy kept grabbbing at my bag, I told him to leave it and was met with "What the F*** are you going to do about it!?"

What happened next was like something out of a film - guy in the seat opposite pulled out something similar to a cue ball in a sock, stood up and hit the guy round the head with it! |(finishing by saying "this man is a guest in our city! dont you DARE disrespect him!)

Bizzare stuff...........
