...Having been inspired by the 'Poverty pork' thread, I have been looking at Boxsters.
I have found a 2002 Boxster 2.7, silver with black leather and 17 inch wheels.
94,000 miles with full dealer history and it looks tidy. I plan to road test it this weekend and all this for under £5000.00

I am justifing this to the better half by saying that the banks are not giving us any interest on our money, so why not buy something to use through the summer.

Whats your thoughts guys, Am I mad??

Thanks.

As I started the poverty Pork thread, I'd say as long as you re happy the car iis reasonably solid, has decent tax / mot / tyres, has a warranty of sorts (mine didn't) then go for it, I'm loving mine, its a little gem and as much fun as i need at the minute ... Bits will break no doubt and will cost more than a Mondeo to fix, as long as we know that, we know what we need toknow .... I'll get blasted for being 'simplistic' but thats just me I guess.

The doomsday merchants demanding Peter Morgan appraisals and full OPC history and saying its too slow, buy a <insert car here that costs at least 3 times as much>, its a girls car, my mates mates mate had one and it go a puncture once so i wouldnt buy one, it will kill you in depreciation, if its not Black on Black you'll never sell it to anyone other than Stevie Wonder etc etc ...

If it all stacks up, you like it and its feels like a safe purchase, get it bought, any doubts, don't, lots out there .... smile

Keep us posted ...

Just check that it doesn't need any additional expensive work carried out imminently eg. clutch, brakes, tyres, radiators, air-con, dampers etc. Such 'consumables' can soon add a few grand to the overall cost, so don't presume it's only going to cost £5K to own.

clutch, brakes, tyres, radiators, air-con, dampers !!!!

can all be checked by the buyer though, even with no Porsche skills.

Clutch
1: pull off in 2nd with the hand brake on see if it stalls or slips
2: flaw it in 4th gear at low revs of your test drive see if it slips.

Tyres:

bend down and look at them !!!

Rads
look though the front see if it's rotten and full of leaves

Aircon

Turn it on see if it blows cold lol

Dampers

push each corner of the car see if it bounce's

It's a 5k car I don't know what people expect, but you can do the normal tests.

I would make sure the oils cold and it not been pre warmed up to hide cold faults and make sure it has a 12 month MOT on it, that will cover CATS etc.
ALso watch for blue smoke when warm, rev it up and look at the back.

Take a look at the service records, do the above checks, have a test drive, get a 90 day warranty from the dealer, buy a 5k car simples.

RAC inspection will be no better imo, A full Porsche inspection will cost 5% of the car

Just because it costs little to buy doesn't mean it will cost little to put right if something's drastically wrong with it.

Your money, your call, but I wouldn't buy any car that's expensive to put right without an inspection. The cost as a percentage of vehicle price it utterly irrelevant.

I have an M3 and was looking to get a 911 when a friend offered me his 2.7 Boxster for about a third of the price. Bought it almost two years ago as a second car (kept the M3) and it's plenty quick enough for top down fun and no regrets at all re buying it

If it checks out go for it, seems very cheap to me for a 2002 model from a dealer so check it out carefully

...It does need propper check through. I am aware this is a cheap car and could become a money pit if its been abused. I will also speak to the servicing dealer just to make sure that they didnt find anything on the last service and thats why it is for sale so cheap.

Speaking to the dealer, he took it in part exchange for a Carrera 4S and just wants it gone for what it owes...alegedly?

I am supprised you can get such a car for such a price, just as long as it doesnt end in tears, afterall if it does go wrong it wont be a cheap fix!

So effectively that implies it is trade sale - just wash and advertised...defo get it checked - you should however get the 90 days dealer back-up as per SOGA etc

Good advice, and I suspect of far more value on a 5k car than suggesting spending c10% of the value on an inspection to telll you its a 10 year old car !!!!!

Other things to check include..

The self cancelling function on the indicators. £200 ish to fix as you need to change all of them and the steering wheel has to come off to do it. Annoying and possibly an MOT fail?

Needless to say, check the soft top mechanism. In this cold weather, you will need to learn and deploy the 'Boxster chop' to avoid creasing the rear window. If the window is cracked, that will be £500ish.

The famous RMS isn't a regularly recurring problem but annoying if you are unlucky as it's gearbox-off to replace it and the clutch may have to be done at the same time. Check for oil underneath near the wire rope in the below picture.

http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=boxster+rms+oil+l...

A clunky transmission could mean the front engine mount is failing. A nice but non-essential fix as funds permit.

The door glass should drop when you lift the door handles on both sides. Annoying as a £0.50 microswitch will be at fault but you need to strip the doors and change the £100 door lock mechanism to fix it.

Put it through a mot , it is supriseing how many faults that will find. If it passes ok all good. Let's not forget it is a £5k car

Colleague bought an 52 3.2S last year for £9K.

Its been reliable but a recent service cost £600 at an Indie including front disc & pads plus other bits and pieces and she needs 4 x new tyres soon so thats probably another £400-500.

She loves it but the costs can add up even if nothing major goes wrong.

Just be prepared and have a £2k minimum repair fund.

Well yeah of course, but it's surprising how many people don't check these things when faced with a 'bargain'. But even if he couldn't be arsed inspecting it himself, £300 on a professional inspection would still be money well spent on a £5K car of this type i.e. potential moneypit if it doesn't go well.

Does the plate end in BVF?

If so, it's the one I sold to a guy privately in January in p-ex for his 996 C2 which I now have.

Even if it's not that one, I paid £6,000 for it last October from a dealer in silver, 2.7 with 88,000 and I did the other 6,000. Proved to be perfect in every possbile way. Only changed because I wanted to try its 'big brother'.

Can't recommend highly enough but get it checked out if you can. I didn't bother until after purchase and it turned out to be an OK one but 'your experience may differ...'

No, no, no. This is Pistonheads soooo...

Full inspection, boroscope, oil analysis and check for over revs.

And then post for opinions on here to ensure it won't lose too much value - and that it is set to be a classic.

Have I forgotten anything?
