996 Turbo in the snow
Discussion
Well folks. I have to say my 150 mile journey in the snow today was excellent.
After removing a foot of snow from the car, I headed out for the A roads and the car was as surefooted as ever. I still find it staggering that the 996 turbo is so capable in all weathers and they are still do cheap to buy.
Epic car!!

With the right tires. After removing a foot of snow from the car, I headed out for the A roads and the car was as surefooted as ever. I still find it staggering that the 996 turbo is so capable in all weathers and they are still do cheap to buy.

A winter ago I had my 03 Turbo - with new tires (~1000 miles on them) -- in at most just a couple of inches of snow on I-40 in the middle of New Mexico. The car was ok, made it through the snow ok, but it was 40 or so miles of no blink driving for me following at big rig at under 40mph until we drove out of the snow.
I never had to brake or turn the car or really get out of the path cleared by the big rig ahead of me and probably many others ahead of it though I never got a chance to pull out and pass and get a clearer view of the road ahead.
During the drive I did give the gas pedal a hard push a couple of times and I could feel the tires break loose and see the clots of snow from the rear tires in the mirror and see the clots from the front tires in my side vision.
More recently I had a chance to 'try' the car in some packed snow on a motel (Best Western in Williams, AZ) parking lot entrance -- on a grade -- and on the flatter portion of the lot.
The tires gripped ok but I wouldn't want to drive with them over a distance of more than the couple of car lengths I got to experience.
But with the right tires, I'd drive my car to the North Pole!
Sincerely,
Rockster.

Its not quite the same but the Boxster on winter tyres in the snow is just a delight
Shortly after I bought my 02 Boxster my area got a couple of inches of snow. I took the car out very late at night (early morning actually) and drove around on unplowed, in some cases untouched, city streets. Ended up in a large parking lot just a few blocks away from home. Got to really throw the car around at around 20mph or less.
All the time on then new Pirelli tires.
What a fun car in the snow.
With the right snow tires like I said I'd drive my Porsche to the North Pole!
Sincerely,
Rockster.
I drove my 996 C2 tip 140km in the snow on Friday, took 4 hrs to do a drive which was 1.20 the day before but the car behaved perfectly for the 2nd winter in a row. Then proceeded to spend the weekend enjoying many Belgium A roads near Zolder some with pretty deep (6 inches) of unplowed snow.
The occasional twitch but I have to say the Porsche has easily been one of the best cars I have owned for winter driving (FWD or RWD).

One of the best drives of my life was with a Boxster S ten years go. Open top at sunny -10 celsius over one of the mountain passes in Austria. The car was - of course - on winter tyres. Max speed was not more than 50 Mph but about every turn could be taken in a lovely controlled slide. Just epic
GT3s are also a delight in the snow. The directness making it even easier to go properly sideways

well, I wish my 5 years of 6tt ownership living in Scotland was quite so upbeat but alas in the Snow on standard rubber there nothing special.
1. There too low and the front splitter ploughs the snow if its any deeper than 5 or so inches.
2.There not proper 4x4. Any Jap or Ford 4x4 will leave a 6tt for dead in the Snow.
3. you have to turn PSM OFF, if you dont and the wheels spin the dME will shut down engine power to such an extent you sit still.
4. The tyres are just too wide at the rear if you have no Tarmac contact.
5. Its practically impossible to have any useful drive at the front unless you have the rears spinning. We have a long drive on a slope with a hedge and a garden bank either side. Once the rears spin on the Snow the rear end can wander either direction. Not good if you have limited space.( dont say steer into it because you cant......your not moving so theres no steerage)
My Cosworth on the other hand would climb the hill left in second gear with no throttle and no fuss.
OK there not dire in the Snow but there not very good either. that's my experience of them as an owner for 5 years and living on a slope in Scotland
