I know, I know … it’s not a very PistonHeads game … but the Soul Calibur series are pretty much the only non–racing games I still play.

I picked up the new one yesterday and stayed up far too late at night playing through the arcade mode. It’s great. Hard to put my finger on what exactly the Project Soul team have tweaked about the fighting mechanic, but it’s faster, more frenetic. Feels halfway between SC4 and Street Fighter. More combos, more blocks and counters.

So far, I like it.

I loved the first one to death. The second one also got as much attention. I missed the 3rd but got the 4th and hated it! They killed the story mode (Map mode in the second was awesome!), they had some odd weapon break system and the old moves that would hurl someone across the screen had gone. Please tell me its all good again!

I’ve not tried story mode in the new one yet, but arcade mode is great. They’ve got rid of the weapon break thing completely (and the rubbish stuff about knocking your opponent’s armour off) and put more emphasis on massive critical edge moves. Great fun.

At first glance, most of the familiar characters seem to have been dropped, but when you start playing around you realise that many of the replacements are actually just redesigns of the old favourites. For example, whilst Taki isn’t in the list there’s a female ninja in a similar outfit with exactly the same weapons and moveset …
