Decided its time to get a real camera

I was looking to save a bit more and get myself a EOS 600d, but I've just seen this deal on ebay

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Canon-EOS-1000D-18-55-75...

So is it worth waiting and getting the 600 , this is less than a 1/3 of the price it would cost for the same 600D kit ,but would I regret not getting the newer better spec 600

Take into account the only camera I've ever previously used is a Canon Ixus

I'd go for the 550D anyway, the 600D looks a bit gimmicky with the fold out screen etc. With the money you save, get the 55-250mm lens.

I must admit that the fold out screen on the 600 actuall is pretty good imho

Certainly if you are planning to use the video facility an articulated screen is well worth having.

In a 'studio' sort of environment and especially using Live View it also offers advantages. Similar with macro shots even in the 'wild'.

'Over a crowd' shots too. Or very low level quick takes without actually having to lie on the ground. In fact you can get lower than you could holding a camera to the eye whilst lying on the ground.

If any of these situations are useful in your areas fo interest then I think you might find the articulated screen rather useful. If not, go with the less expensive solution if it gives you all that you need.

eBay link is to a 1000D not a 500D. Quite a different camera, 1000D doesn't do video for a start.

Get the specifications side by side and find the diffeences. How much in the next year are you likely to need them? Remember that you can shoot low level macro by bending down etc.

As a first SLR either will be fine but you will hvae a very steep learning curver understanding the 3 way management of exposure controls, composition, how your autofucus is working etc and either camera body will allow you to do this. Stay clear of the 1000D as there is too much automation to get in the way of learning.

When you have more to spend then buy glass not a body upgrade.

Have just gone through the same, and decided that the 270 odd quid saved on going for the 500d was quite a few decent lenses. As said though, if the screen is something you are likely to use a lot, then that might be the better option despite the higher price.

But it's not a £270 saving, my 600d cost £450 total and that was for a brand new (not refurbed) complete with 18-55mm kit lens. You just need to keep a sharp eye out for deals.

Unfortunately the £270 is only a proportion of one truly decent lens, but the same logic applies. In reality, any of the most recent DSLRs can produce great images. You will notice much more difference in image quality between a cheap lens and a decent one, than between different cameras.

Where was that? That's a great price for a 600D
