I would certainly save the money and get a Sony HX9 instead
I tried both in Jessops and there was very little in it at all - the HX9 is a brilliant camera and has dropped about £50 since I bought mine for Christmas.
It does everything you need including excellent HD video. The only negative is it takes slightly longer to focus than I am used to on previous compacts and the flash pops up where you would instinctively want to hold the camera - apart from that once you are used to it it is excellent

I used to own a Linux lx3. Essentially the same camera just with a different lens and some other bits and bobs.
Very good camera with great image quality but not on par with a dslr, although surpasses the majority of what other compacts can throw at it.
I can't speak for the lx5 but one thing that ruined the lx3 for me was how the camera dealt with flash. It always overexposed and blew out highlights when shooting with the flash. It just didn't know how to meter for it. Even in full intelligent auto mode it just couldn't take a decent flash lit photo.
Hopefully that problem was resolved with the lx5. If not, I wouldn't bother.
If you are coming from a dslr looking for a dslr quality camera that can fit in your pocket, buy somethIng else. If you are used to compacts and want to buy a better one, buy it. It is one of the best high end compacts. Just not a dslr beater.

Two of the big attractions of the LX5 are the (relatively) fast lens and large sensor.
