Anyone recommend a good hotel in New York?
Discussion
Heading to NYC for 5 nights in March, and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for a hotel in New York?
Been before, and stayed near Times Square - quite fancy staying in the SoHo/Tribeca areas for a bit of a change. Looking for something reasonably priced - would prefer more boutique style than OTT room sizes/suites etc.
Any help appreciated! Seems to be a minefield.

Depends on budget, Hampton Inn SoHo always has good deals and is highly rated on TA if you take much stock in their reviews.
Stayed in a variety of places up and down Manhattan, we stayed in the Affinia Dumont which is a block or two across from the ESB it had awesome views of the Crysler building, the room was huge and had a full kitchen. There wasn't a great deal in the immediate area bar and restaurant wise if that's improtant to you. My main priority is just to be close to a subway stop so not a huge concern, last time we stayed kind of off to one side of Times Square, it seemed the best of both worlds as it was a residential area and had loads of bars and restaurants a stones throw away, and we were going to see a few shows so was ideal.

If you don't mind small rooms http://www.sohogrand.com/
Good call getting away from Times Sq.....it's like going to London and staying at Leicester Sq/Picadilly Circus!

Affinia 50. I go back every time I go to NY.
Book a corner 1 bed with a balcony. They are massive rooms. It's opposite Smith & Wollensky and about a 10 min walk to Times Sq. There's 51st St Subway just round the corner and there's a brilliant Diner on the same street for Brekkie. I love it there.

I work in NYC a lot. Whenever I can, I stay at Hotel Giraffe on Park Ave South - not SOuth of HOuston, but fits the bill otherwise (though can be a little pricey, depending on seasonal demand).

I've stayed there and would recommend it. Good value, great location, clean rooms and breakfast included in the price.
+1 for Hampton Inn's. I've stayed at the one in Times Square and was quite impressed with it (for what it is anyway). I would defo look at a Hampton Inn again if I was going to the states.
If its anything to go by, the one in Times Square had a lovely huge bed, decent bathroom, free wifi, free breakfast, free afternoon cookies! and nice staff.
OP asks for recommendations around SoHo/TriBeCa, and 75% of suggestions are 30-40 blocks north.
TriBeCa Grand is not a bad price, SoHo has loads, just Google it. If you can go a couple more blocks north, there's Washington Square Hotel in Greenwich Village, just above Bleecker Street. It's totally different to Mid/Uptown, and all the better for it (IMO). Stayed there several times and can highly recommend.
