Was touch screen sat nav available on the Gen 1 ?
For the last year of Gen 1 production ('09 MY?)The new Gen 2 incorporated quite a lot of developments and improvements, including a new engine and PDK, although many others were options. Can't remember all the details, but the Turbo S incorporated all these options - so would be the 'full fat' version.
Best to get a decent road test from around the launch period to get the full chapter and verse.
IMO if you want the fastest out of the factory vehicle then pick a gen 2 997tt with pdk but if you care about reliability and the option to tune your vehicle then pick a gen 1 997tt as you can not beat it.
I could afford either one and stick with my gen 1 all day long!!!!
The gen 1 has a bullet proof engine and the gen 2 has a pile of mush.
The gen 1 with a good exhaust system sound the mutz nutz and the gen 2 does not sound as good thanks to the DFI.
I think everyone else has pretty much covered the rest of the differences ie 3.8ltr, rear led's, wheels, drl other funky gadgets like torque vectoring etc.... etc....

I agree with many of the comments re performance being better in many respects on gen 2 car especially the steering feel which no-one seems to mention. The gen 2 chassis has also been optimised to let the tail wag more than the gen 1. Gen 2 PDK is surreal too as others have mentioned.
Aber, meine Herren der motor in der generation ein 997 Turbo ist ein technisches meisterwerk.
During my winter check at Hatfield the porsche engineer was proudly purring under the car at the engine explaining it was easily good enough for 650bhp due to it being a fully serviceable racing block. He was encouraging me to unleash the beast saying even if it does go pop at some stage they're easy to rebuild! I'm seriously considering sending it to a cargraphic dealer!
I'd love to have a ride in a modded gen 1 car!!!!!

"The gen 1 has a bullet proof engine and the gen 2 has a pile of mush."
I have a 997-2 TT. I am not as knowledgeable about the engine differences as folks here are. I'd really like to know why the gen 2 is a pile of mush? I can't seem to find a detailed description of teh Mezger vs "9A1" (I believe is the designation?). If someone could point me to a resource for the details or something more than "the Mezger is race tested" (I have assumed ALL porsche engines are race tested at some point - at least that's what Hurley said).
I appreciate any enlightenment. Steve

Your engine isn't mush. It just does not have a racing pedigree but may well start being developed for racing in the next generation of the 991 GT3. Unless you're planning on tune to high bhp it makes no difference and as an all round car your gen 2 is better road car IMO. Still wouldn't swap mine for a gen 2 though unless I wanted PDK.I have a 997-2 TT. I am not as knowledgeable about the engine differences as folks here are. Pretty good info here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porsche_911
Read from 996 GT3 to 97 turbo and you'll note references to Mezger
