NOOB SRAM X5 gear issue question

I have had my bike about 6 months now and for about 2 months or so now I have had gear selector issues which have slowly gotten worse to a stage now [seeing as I am now riding to work every day instead of just playing at weekend in the mud at Swinley / A.N.Other muddy offroad track] it is beginning to really cheese me off....
The front mech seems to take an age to change and hesitates between granny ring and middle, and then between the middle to big boy ring. Now I have seen the 2 screws [L and H] I think I need to play with, but which one do I play with and do I turn them clockwise / anti-clockwise?
For the rear mech, I sometimes try to choose a lower gear but choosing too low-a-gear makes the chain jump off to between the lowest gear and the wheel hub. Again I have identified 2 screws [L and H] but which one do I need to play with and do I turn it clockwise / anticlockwise?
I also have barrel adjusters on the handlebars - do these come into play when gear issues like mine happen?....

read this then have a play, essentially the "L" screw controls the movement towards the inner chainring, the "H" screw controls the movement to the outer chainring, somewhere there will be a happy medium.
from experience, sram mtb mechs arent the best and they do tend to have poor springs. it would be worthwhile to give it a good clean and lube before adjusting it.

Have you had the bike serviced in the time you have owned it? or have you pulled through any cable? If the answer to both these questions is "NO", then you will probably be suffering from cable stretch.
DON'T touch the screws you have mentioned, these are your limit screws. Once these are set there is usually no need to touch these again.
