Who was the old chap who raced his space frame Skoda it had a 1700 BDT engine from a RS 200 and F1 slicks on the rear
I saw him at Mallory Park about 10 yrs ago i think in the Modified Saloon class and always left the field for dead , Think his name was Sudgon ?

I have always liked Skodas. They made an interesting, diverse range of cars over the years - none of them were bland.

It was Tony Sugden. He came to Castle Combe in 1993 and competed in the Special GT race at one meeting. I believe that the car had a 600 bhp 2.3 litre Cosworth engine at the time; it's the red one in the photograph.

The photograph is at the entry to Tower Corner on the first lap. I was in the other Skoda (the white one) which was Rover V8 powered.

That's true but it never did Mercedes any harm! Local cabbie here uses a VRS ESTATE.

Yes that's him i saw him and the car at Mallory some 10 yrs later the car was blue & white then , Jeees that thing really shifted !
I can remember when i spoke to him he did originally have a Cosworth BDT in the car then swapped it for a YB version it was more reliable.

a teacher at my school had a 1100s with a 2.0 pinto in the back as the gearbox and engine were compatible..

The jokes about Skoda's started from @ the mid 70's when the company had adapted to making affordable cars for the people of Czechoslovakia (as it was then). This resulted in cars that lagged behind the quality of it's western rivals, basically out of financial necessity, and designs that were in the main, a case of function over form.

The problem is, when people talk about Skoda's from this era, they fail to take into account the circumstances behind the design and manufacturing requirements that the company needed to adhere to in order to produce the cars.

However, as I see it, this:



....isn't exactly an unattractive looking car and it does have the claim to fame of having the same drivetrain layout as a Porsche 911.

Also, as I seem to recall "back in the day", there were a fair few Skoda's running around the UK despite all the jokes.
