Heading to Rio in a few weeks for the first time?

For anyone who's been before, what would you recommend doing?

Statue of Christ.

Sugarloaf Mountain using the cable car.

The old fort and museum at the end of Copacabanna Beach.

Visit one of those nice restaurants that serve the grilled meats on the swords. (go hungry!).

Cocktails / quails eggs, as the sun goes down....

As said, go to Christ the redeemer, a truly spectacular sight, sugar loaf is ok, but watch out for monkeys. The beaches are incredible and if there is a parade, then go and join in.

Only take out what money you need, go carefully with your camera, but it's a great place. Can also recommend the grill, and a trip to the maracana is well worth it just to say you have been. Favela tour is also good, but prepare yourself

Leave your watch at home or take a cheapo...look out for pickpockets. Happened to me twice.

Drink rum or cachacha <sp> out of a coconut on the beach. If you get the timing right, go and see the samba bands battle it out for who gets to lead the carnival out in February - one of the best nights out I've had in my life.

There's some good bars down in Ipanema <sp again> well worth a visit. You can definitely drink all night down there and there are some great little beach bars that serve way past dawn.

As said, you've got to do the touristy thing and go up Sugarloaf mountain one day and have a daft picture taken holding up the Christ the redeemer statue the next.

Be brave and go to one of the samba nights at the schools. Unidos da Tijuca is one of the easiest to reach, and usually one of the most friendly.

Didn't get any bother at all as it happens. Don't see what the fuss is all about, providing you stick to the nice areas
