My guess is he was intending to photograph the player in the background, using spot focus in the middle of the screen. Unluckily for the photographer (or maybe luckily, as it turns out) the lens tracked the ball instead!

I have lots of images of very sharply focussed flying insects, and/or precipitation, with my intended subject a similarly blurry mess in the background

As it turns out though, this one is a much better picture than my wasps, blue-bottles and snow-flakes! I only hope it was worth the viewfinder-shaped dent in the skull and broken lens, that looks to be the inevitable outcome!
