Does anyone know when Microsoft are going to release their next gen console?

My 360 has just popped its silicon cloggs, and if the new console is imminent, I won't buy another 360. I'll just wait for its big brother.

I've heard rumours that there may be an announcement at E3 from Sony and Microsoft but I wouldn't expect them out for Christmas or anything like that.

It certainly isn't imminent.

Latest (seemingly credible) rumours suggest that MS commissioned IBM to develop a new chipset very late last year, and development kits will go out to MS-approved dev teams around April time, which would be consistent with a 2013 launch.

But no-one really knows and there is certainly no official pronouncement.

Speculation says fall 2013, its apparantly running AMD's 40nm Radeon 6000 GPU from last year.

Couple of years off, if they do it at all.

Plus you never want a launch console anyway - hefty price and rubbish games usually. Current xbox 360 and PS3 will be a great platform for 3+ years, and the hardware itself is very cheap now.

Id buy a new one tbh. You have a good 2 years out of it. And the other poster is correct, never get a launch console. Let them sort the niggles out and problems and then get it. Usually the first year you will see all that ironed out and prices dropped.

Erm, righto, and six years on how are MS doing working out those niggles? RRoD completely elimated now then? hehe

2 years on from the 360s launch they had sorted most of them out, the RRoD is a non-issue now, if you get one they'll replace it as per their warranty agreement, you get less issues with a 360 than you would a PS3 and better games.

No one is able to completely eliminate those issues as it's not a fault of the machine, more, how the machine is used.

Boys, boys! Let's not get into fanboy my-console-is-better-than-yours, eh? MS and Sony have both had their problems.

On one level, it's quite surprising that 360 sales held up so robustly after the true extent of the RRoD problem came to light. From what I understand, it's not an issue at all with later original shape consoles or with the slims.

I thought the issue with the RROD was a design fault from day 1. I'd been told that the original design incorporated a larger heat sink but when it came to assembly the cd drive wouldnt fit so the cheapest fix was to remove a section of the heat sink. This then helped add to the issue of overheating the GPU causing the solder to become tacky and the pins to lift of the circuit board.

I'd also heard that when launched, only 10 out of a 100 360's actually worked coming of the production line because they rushed it out before christmas. This was the reason for the shortage of consoles.

No where near out. Resi 6 isn't out until end of the year and that won't be on the PS3/360 for a short amount of time before new ones are out. I say they'll be here late 2013 or early 2014.

You're right, there were design faults with the first ones because they rushed it out, I think to beat Sony. They had a massive problem coping with the amount of heat they produced. The later ones with bigger, more efficient heatsinks there is no issue but it is still possible to RRoD it, depending on how long the machine is running for and if it's not getting enough ventilation.

Bugger. Looks like a new 360 then.
I saw something called a 360 S, which has built in wi-fi. Is that all it does extra over the normal 360?

The cheapest I've seen a standard 360 is about £125. Anyone know of a finer deal than that?

The S is for Slim - the Xbox 360 Mk 2, in effect.

It has built in wi-fi, and is smaller and quieter. It's also black rather than the original cream colour. Comes in 4Gb and 250Gb variants - but as someone above said, with a little bit of improvisation you can use the HDD from your existing unit, remove it from its casing and drop it into the Slim, so you may only need the cheaper 4Gb version.

Not exactly top of the list of factors that sway a buying decision but it also has a lower rated PSU and so draws less power.

Scratch that. The 'core' system is the old cream coloured one that doesn't have hdmi connection.

£129.98 from Amazon is the cheapest I can see an 'S' for...
