Any ideas on whether it is necessary to always hone cylinder bores when replacing piston rings?

I've rebuilt a few engines before; I honed the bores on a diesel engine and the previous V8 engine in this car (now a 3.9) but did not do so when I rebuilt the 4.6 for the rally car or a 3.5 with a friend.

Any recommended procedure or tips would be appreciated.

I would have thought you want to at least run a glaze buster down it if you want the rings to bed in. If you've got a broken ring I would have thought there was a good chance of bore damage though in which case it might need more.

You have to hone the bores otherwise the new rings won't bed in.
