Ok, silly engine time..

At the moment, the cento is running a single throttle body, thru quite a restrictive inlet manifold..

Now.. the options for upgrading are..

1.) Swap to 1242 punto lump
2.) Turbo conversion

Alternatively, I was thinking tonight, what about throttle bodies, as in four of the buggers, on a.n.other ECU...

So what do folk reckon is do-able with a FIAT 1108cc lump? Should I bother saving the hard earned pennies and doing the conversion to TB's?? If so, what might it end up costing?

TIA,

Slinky

Well if you MUST keep the fiat....i'd fit the uno turbo ie engine.....but personally i'd change the car for something RWD if your gonna start putting silly power from a turbo through the wheels. (Early MR2 turbo?)

But then I iz no expert!

The thing is... I love the cento, it's wheel @ each corner go-kart fun... just absolutely gutless (although it will surprise some folk when wound up in the twisties!)

Unfortunately, the uno turbo lump is some serious work to fit in, and the punto GT lump just won't go! Hence the thoughts of TB's or turbo conversion..

First of, mail me some pics of the bay.

Low blow turbo conversion blowing 3 - 4psi should be doable for little cash. Probably the easiest way would be to swap the single point injetion throttle body setup for an R5 GTT carb (machine an adaptor plate up to make it fit) which should be reasonably bolt on, would probably need to swap the fuel pump for the 5 item or similar. I would think that would give you another 25bhp and a shed load more torque and by all accounts the Fire engine is a hardy little bugger so standard internals should be up to it. You could get really nasty and do the bodge a certain well known vauxhall tuner used to use and fit two headgaskets to drop the compression, run around 6psi then, similar power output but more torque. Saab 900 T16 or R5GTT intercooler could be plumbed in without a problem.

Throttle Body's are certainly doable but make sure theres room between the head and the firewall for them and the air filters. On the AX's which I'd guess is a similar sized bay it was always a bit tight. Would be pricey unless you get some Weber 40's cheap and we make throttle body's out of them. I can get cheap MBE management so management wise your sorted.

Or.....

Go for 4 bike carbs of a similar sized carbed engine (Old GSXR?) small carbs that can flow sufficent for your engine size and the noise.... oh the noise will sound like a mini Countach snarling and growling. However they'll be a bastard to balance and cost you plenty on the rollers to get them fueling right.... but the noise again you'd need to swap the fuel pump for a suitable low pressure item.

Some food for thought there chap.

Turbo conversion should be do-able for about 300 quid, providing the uno turbo manifold bolts up to your head. If not budget £350 for some mig welder madness.

R5 GTT Carb From Scrappies - £30
T25 From R5 GTT or Fester RST again from Scrapies - £70
Saab 900 Intercooler - Have a spare = Beer
Adaptor plate for carb - 30-40 quid or so to have it cut at a local engineering place
Samco hosing, pipe etc - have loads = Beer
Fabricate oil feed = oil pressure light hole and some goodridge hose = £20
Fabricate oil return - Drill hole in sump and weld
Water feed if required/wanted, T into the heater matrix lines
Fabricate Exhaust Manifold or Weld a Flage to the bottom of the current one = £50
Clamps/Sundries/Oil/Fire Extinguisher/999 Charges etc. £100

Total = £310 <insert Dr Evil Syle Laughter Here>

Munter,

now that I know Matt, I have a feeling I'm going to end up poor!! ... he keeps giving me ideas, and after a run out in the Saab, oooh my poor bank manager!!!

Time to buy an old shed and plough money into the cento I think... (after canada tho!)

If I've got money left at the end of the month it gets lobbed into the misc car stuff account, always handy for those bargains you can't help but buy, like Reverie seats and a stack dash - which are next on the todo list

Problem is I'm just sorting final arrangements for a new project, a 19th Century Chapel, which might suck up a bit of my cash flow. Luckily it had a 20ft by 23 foot reading room built onto the front of the 20ft by 31ft chapel in 1910. 20ft X 23ft garage/workshop - Oh Oh Oh , just need to work out if a 4 post lift will fit now and wire it for three phase

Get a two poster Matt, theyre more useful....unless youre doing 4 wheel alignments.

Could well end up like that , Idealy want a 4 poster with lifts front and rear, don't know if you've seen them, several places around my way use them, bit a 4/2 poster hybrid. Allows you to get the car in the air then lift the front/rear or both off the ramp. Only problem is you don't see many of them kicking about second hand
