offshore interview questions?

Hello all,

I am here to ask you members that are currently in the offshore oil industry about what questions I could expect on an upcoming interview. The position is for a greenhand roustabout.

I am just trying to prepare myself and obviously alot of you will have already had an interview for offshore companies so was hoping someone could tell me what to expect.

I know there will be the obvious ones like "why you?" "what are your strengths and weakness's?" etc but are there any others i should be prepared for.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Watch out for "What's a greenhand roustabout", that could be tricky.

What is a greenhand roustabout anyway? A type of chicken?

Do you know what a roustabout does offshore?

Where do you plan to be in 5 years?

What can you bring to the company?

Fear of heights, water or been away from home?

Just out of interest which company are you having the interview with? To be honest if you are getting an interview as a greenhand you already have the job, be polite do your research and don't say anything stupid and just be honest.

Have a flick through your course materials too.

rigmonkey - thanks for the quick reply, I would prefer not to say which company its with mate as its a friend of a friend who has got me the interview and they dont normally take on greenhands. I had those questions in my telephone interview for them which the guy seemed pretty pleased with my answers. However I really want to nail this interview as i cant put it into words how much i want to work offshore! I am also going to research a lot about the company incase they ask me what I know about them.

Fair enough about the company, it's not what you know, it's who you know.

What's your answer going to be about what a roustabout does? Some of us might be able to help you fine tune your answer (this will show to the interviewer that you have researched).

I would say something along the lines of...

"a roustabout is an entry level position on the rigs and the duites that are required are things like rig house keeping, painting and maintence of drilling equipment, moving materials around the rig, assissting the roughnecks as required, assisting in mixing the mud. I have experience of this when I was in the royal navy doings tasks such as ships husbandry to my current role working on building sites moving materials, assisting other trades and general site tidiness as I know the imprtance of having a safe work area as to prevent accicdents and injuries"

Pretty bloody good to be honest.

"A roustabout is part of the deck crew on the rig. The duties of a roustabout are; good standard of housekeeping and maintenance on the rig, working with the crane operators to assist with banksman and slinging duties, assisting and relieving roughnecks as required, assisting the derrickman with mixing chemicals, to be an active member in safety programs and meetings."

Just re-worded the first bit for you, but your original answer was really good, the rest of what you wrote about the navy was good too.

Thanks pal, i will do. Thanks for tweeking my answer, it sounded more professional than mine.

They are ringing me back hopefully tomorrow to arrange the date for me to go to Aberdeen for the interview and test (apparently its some sort of aptitude test but shes going to explain all that to me when she rings)

Ill let you know how I get on though bud.

Not forgetting the most important task - Ensuring that the doghouse flasks are kept filled and warm.

No coffee = grumpy driller.


Also, once in Aberdeen for the interview, your attitude to safety will be under scrutiny. You will probably find that you will be taken up a stair at some point, this is deliberate. Resist the temptation to walk beside your interviewer to continue the conversation. Keep to the left and hold the handrail and you will be fine.
