I was absolutely dead set on going this season, but redundancy in summer put paid to that. Would usually go on a bit fun trip with mates, g/f etc.
Usually go to a great place in Tignes, however its in Brev, at the Bottom. In January we've had a great time, last March it was getting a bit sloppy at the bottom end of the Espace Killy though (it was positively warm!) and we've done it to death.

New job has materialised. Me and my Dad are desperate to go somewhere this season. It will be at least 8th March.

Usually go to a wonderful cheap chalet/hotel place in Tignes, full of seasonaires, backpackers, students and fun people, however its in Brev, at the Bottom, and we've done the same for the past few years.

I'd like a recccomendation of somewhere that's easy to fly to from Manchester/Leeds etc, easy transfers, and some dirt cheap accommodation. We're talking Hostel, bunkhouse type thing here, happy to rough it in a double room with my Dad. Will be going for the Skiing, not the Apres, eating from the supermarket etc. Doesn't have to be a big resort, but needs good snow late season and a few some good rolling, fun, blue/red intermediate runs.

Would it be wise to decide a week, book the time off work and then gamble on finding a great last minute deal a few days before heading out?

Any ideas?

(So far I've been reccomended Les Menuires as a resort, which is apparently the 4th of the 3 valleys!? - but no accomodation/transport.

If we can't find anywhere cheap or easy enough in time it may end up as a weekend of rock-dodging and huddling from storms in scotland!)

I can HIGHLY recommend Altaussee in Austria.

I've been a few times now and it is simply fantastic. The main ski runs wind their way down the Loser Mountain (http://www.loser.at/winter/skiresort-loser/aktuell.html?L=1).

Altaussee and The Loser is quite "young" in terms of how established the skiing is compared to some of the more commercial areas, so its not as busy. Basically you dont have to queue as long for the lifts and you have more rooms on the slopes. Which is great for beginners learning to ski or the more experienced!

The town is very picturesque with some fantastic historical (and beautiful) places near by for the days you dont want to hit the slopes!

We normally stay at The Hotel Tyrol (http://hoteltyrol.co.at/english/index.html), its a family run hotel with great friendly service, home cooked evening meals, sauna, infra-red cabin etc... The hotel is around a 10 min drive to the slopes & there is a free (return) ski bus which stops (literally!) right in front of the hotel.

I really cant recommend this enough, especially if you are going with the family!

We've had some pretty cheap self-catering holidays at Easter in Val Thorens.

Lift passes aren't super cheap, but it's the 3 Vallees! Snow pretty much guaranteed, pretty quiet and you can eat for a fiver a day if you're frugal and self cater (of course we never are! smile ).
