Remote switch (Cable release) not working with 7D

Hi,
Have had the 7D for nearly 2 years now and the, cheap non-Canon, remote switch RS-80N3 has stop working - thinking this is a case of 'buy cheap buy twice' I now have the genuine article but that doesn't do anything either, I've cleaned the contacts with methylated spirit to no avail - any ideas before I send the camera in for a service? (Hoping I've done something stupid, I like disabling the function without realising it or something, but I don't think you can)

Is it a recent purchase?

If it is, and you bought from a shop take it in and see what they say.

It's really just a simple switch inside so there's not a whole lot that could have gone wrong, the cable/3-pin connector itself could be damaged.

I'm not sure if there are any setting that 'disable' the socket for remote control, although the internal connections could have fallen off (highly doubtful unless you have been swinging your camera about!).

Do you need to have the Drive set to remote? ..Are you sure it's set?

Wierd theres not much that would affect this. Switch it to manual mode and manual focus, make sure the remote isnt locked 'open'. Could be a broken contact in the camera itself I guess.

It's nearly 2 years old and out of guarantee
I've been through all the menu's settings and both books (the manual that came with it and the dummies guide) and can't find a drive to set to remote (why would there be? - you just plug the cable in and take it back out to return to normal & I'm sure I didn't have to change anything to use it when it was working)
Have tried sitching to manual mode + focus and then a full reset all to no avail, so it's going in to be looked at today - I'll report back with the outcome.
