MTB for £300 - £400

So got the bike out today with a mate, god I was dying. Had a go on my friends new Carrera Vegnance.
What a difference. Suddenly I was a full of energy.

As the old girl is 6 years old and needs bits replacing, think I may treat myself to a new bike soon.

Looking for hard tail, large frame as I'm 6ft 6" and fat.
Good quality as I plan to use it out in the welsh mountains.

So PH, what would you recommend?

Not fussed. Not after anything amazing. Just something like his carrera.
Tempted just to get the same actually. I can swap parts over from my current bike as it has good spec parts.

But if the parts are 6 years old, so may need replacing, and technology has moved on
I'd be on the lookout for something secondhand in that price range TBH! - Good luck with the search!

Those are £299 at Halfords. I also got my bike out last weekend - and worked out it is 15 years old

Brakes needed degreasing and only a few gears work/need adjusting.

MBUK have a sub £400 hardtail test this month, if you fancied a new one, Might be worth a look, but fyi the Carerra Vulcan wins

I'd keep an eye on Ebay and pick up a little used Rockhopper Comp.

This one sold for under your budget, has been used 10 times and cost the owner £900!!

^^^^ This. For your sort of budget you can either buy a nasty new one or a reasonable quality 2nd hand one like the Rockhopper.

Commencal Premier plus, crap name awesome bike! I've got the red one myself looks stunning, and has the hydraulic discs (Really quite good, along way ahead of most other brakes at this price point) and lock out forks which are a bonus!

What needs replacing on your current bike? Wouldn't it be worth getting it serviced and seeing if you get back in to cycling? I picked up a cheap 20 year old MTB when I started cycling again and was more than happy with it. Once I'd lost some weight (and it had been stollen) I treated myself to something a bit better on a cycle to work scheme, which is worth checking out if your employer offers it.
