Fabulous Baker Brothers

Watching this (recorded) for the first & last time.
I'm still on the fence as to whether it's actually a very clever dark, ironic comedy show.
What a load of contrived, aspirational middle class bulls

Wood has been used for centuries, presumably due to availability and the ability not to blunt knives. However in the eighties the oh so clever Public Health Inspectorate decided that wood was no longer deemed hygenic and insisted food establishments turned to stainless steel (blunt knife problems) or polythene/nylon blocks and boards. There was a fair degree of resistance, especially from butchers who had used wooden block benches since the trade began. Some butchers refused to change and were duly both persecuted and prosecuted.
However scientific study contiued and it became apparent that contrary to the PHI view natural (unvarnished) wood board is the most hygenic and least liable to harbour bacterial material. It took years for the Public Health bodies to retract their requirement for plastic materials and no recompence or even apology ever made to those that suffered prosecution for their false beliefs.
There is a whole chapter regarding this debarcle in this book.

Thanks for that! I'm glad I'm not the only one who understands this, I saw one of those sciencey type shows a while ago where they measured how much bacteria grew on different surfaces (probably prompted by the retraction of the old rules) and the wooden one was the clear winner, actually reducing bacteria numbers where the others all multiplied like gang busters!Wood has been used for centuries, presumably due to availability and the ability not to blunt knives. Seen the first two of these and love the look of most of the food they prepare, anything the baker does especially looks fantastic.
They are portrayed as utter smug cocks though and the fake jostling and banter is tedious. Still a decent cookery show just needs to be toned down a touch if they do any other series.
