Help please sticking a mahogany skin onto fibreglass

Can anyone help what is the best adhesive to be able to stick mahogany veneers to a fibreglass boat hull to give the impression that it is made of wood . Has anyone out there done this and can advise?

I presume you are enquiring about the nature of the resin used whether polyester, vinylester or epoxy ?

it is also pertinent to enquire if it's gelcoated or not ?

there is also the case that what looks like wood generally is wood e.g. teak decking on yachts and ply decks on dinghies and dayboats ...

'composite' in describing sailing dinghies refers to a fibre reinforced plastic hull with wooden decking rather than the fact it;s made of fibreglass ...

Yes, Gelcoat is also a good question!

Mahogany is not very easy to glue to anything with Epoxy from memory as it is quite oily.

Epoxy and mahogany sticks like st to a blanket.

I suspect you are thinking of teak, which is very oily and requires careful preparation to be glued.

hi the hull is polyester but the veneers are to be stuk to the gelcoat . in 1994 the colombo 'romance was made like this i hope to try this on a small 14' hull

Epoxy with a vacum bag.
For what it's worth, mahogany bleaches with the sun.
My deckhouse was ply/mahogany, it looked terrible in the end. It went almost white. I ended up taking it off and making it in Teak. The oil in teak will not affect the bond with epoxy.

3M's 5200 sticks anything to anything else on boats.

Only use this if there is no chance you will want to un-stick it in the future.

It will also stick to yourself, your clothes, passing airliners, and anyone who comes within three miles of an opened tube. It will never come off.

It is the most lethal sticky stick stuff known to man.

I have used it to stick teak to fiberglass on my boat and will be using it to help stick the keel on too.
