Road tyres for MTB

Looking to get a set of road tyres for my MTB whilst I save more money for a road bike and wondered if anyone uses, has used or could recommend other good tyres. Currently running 26 x 2.1 knobblies that came with the bike and have seen either Schwalbe Marathon Plus at 26 x 1.75 or the Marathon Green Guard at 26 x 2.

I take it either of these would be ok but I may need to replace my inner tubes if I go with either of them?. Does anyone know the difference between the 2 tyres apart from about £6. I would like some puncture protection which is why I have chosen these 2.

Any others I should consider looking at?

I think I was looking at them when getting my set, i'm sure it was just price differnce as mine were on offer. Let us know you get on with them in case I need a new set

I ran Schwalbe Marathon Plus for a few weeks.

I found them hard work, they are quite heavy. As for puncture protection: one punctured second time out (mighty thorn) and then the sidewall started to bulge on the rear. I returned them for a refund.

Now running Continental Travel Contact. Superior in every way.

I have bought them now and will fit Saturday ready for my Sunday morning treck. If I have any problems I will let you know.

First time out on my new tyres this morning, did 34 miles and upped my average speed by 4mph. I have them at 55psi so quite hard but cuts out some more of the rolling resistance. I am well pleased with them

I'm with Red 4 on this. Everything at home is now on Continental tyres - my roadie on 'Grand Prix 4seasons', eldest's MTB on 'Contact' 26 x 1.75" as he now uses it to commute to University, and the wife's commuter has had Continental 'Touring Plus' fitted for a while now. No problems with any of them so far, and I have no hesitation in recommending them. Puncture resistance and good tread wear life, and usually available with some kind of deal on sites like wiggle - my Grand Prix for instance, came as a set, two tyres and two tubes for about £60.

I just switched in two stages from the extreme knobblies I've been running for ten years, via Michelin Wild RaceR (very good rolling, traction and cornering) to the Continental Travel Contacts, which were a step up again in speed. I only changed to keep up with my riding friends whose mountain bikes seem to be slowly turning into racers!

I was concerned that they would be useless off road, but a short section of muddy track on Saturday was fine. You just have to sit back more in the saddle to keep traction.

They are also warranted against punctures for a year which is some promise!

Very grippy in all weathers, good puncture resistance, proper profile to maintain good grip in corners (the Continentals look terrible for that), can go up to 110 psi, available in 1 inch widths (which are getting hard to find) so good weight benefits. You need 26x1 or 26x1.5 tubes though.
