60s Morse Program Last Night
Discussion
Any one watch it ?
I missed a fair bit, inc the begining. It was set during the Mid ? 60s with a very young Morse and had lots of "Our Type" of cars, inc at least 2 Stunning, Black Mk3 Zephre / Zodiac Police Cars, which looked lovely, not sure if they are genuine Ex Police cars, i vaguely remember these as a young boy.
But some Glaring mistakes were Very Obvious.
Worst i saw was a Powder Blue E Type Series 2 FHC, parked up outside a building alongside some other cars, complete with an A ( 1963/64 )registration and its No plate tacked on to the bonnet just below the Air Intake. Powder Blue was One of the More Grotty E Type Colours and wasnt available until early 1969 with the launch of the Series 2.
A 240/340 Jag for sale on a Dodgy Dealers front that had most of its windows broken, had a G Plate.
A young Morse was driving his Guvnor around in a Very Cool looking, Black Mk1 2.4 or 3.4 Jag, complete with Red Interior, Webasto Type Sunroof, Black Painted Wires and Coombs Style rear spats.

Yes, good program. Was it a One off ? Wish i had seen the begining.
I saw the Dark Red Mk2 on that used car lot as well, sure the Spiv salesman said that it was Only 18 Months Old ? It had a Dodgy vinle roof and looked very similar to the one he drove in the Original Series.
Such a shame that in the Oroginal Series they didnt see fit to give Morse a Proper Hot " Getaway " car, ie a MK2 3.8 Manual !! Or even an E Type.

Trying not to go too far OT....
Weren't A suffix plates only issued in London in period, (ie 1964) but then issued retrospectively by other offices to cars that were re-registered?
So if you registered a pre 1965 car (say, that you had restored) in Liverpool, in 1971, you got a Liverpool plate A suffix - which would never have been issued in 1964.
I am certain that there was something like that, so any non-London A suffix cars have been re-registered at some point...?
Also that the DVLC were never very consistent or accurate until the mid-70's, so it would be possible to import a 1960 car from Europe in 1974 and get a '74 plate issued....

A rather classic British Motor, not often seen outside enthusiast circles...
A brown Montego.

I suspect that it's difficult enough finding the right model of car for the period that it's set in, let alone getting the exact model right to satisfy us 'anoraks'; I think they at least try and get the plates right, even if they sometimes fail with the exact models and colour schemes! I saw the E-Type, but didn't really notice that it was the wrong model, must pay more attention
I assumed that the red Mk11 (something similar to 248 RPA??) was deliberately used to make a link with the original series, and yes, the 'spiv' did suggest that it was 18months old, which would fit as it was set in about 1965 IIRC.

the black jag was a Mk1.
Its always a problem with programmes like this, but unfortunantly there are few original cars about. Unlike clothes, which can easily be reproduced, and tins of food, whcih can be re-used, cars are cars and if they dont exist, you have to use what you can.
I want around in the 60s, but my dad tells me you'd often see traction engines repairing the roads, loads of seriously rusty/damaged/batle scarred 30s,40s, 50s cars on the roads, no American cars at all. Even 18 month old cars would be full of rust. Renault Dalphines and Simcas were "everywhere", but most have rusted away.
And the cars which are around today are in beautiful condition, lovingly restored and pampered. But not a les leston "tuning" part/racing stripe in sight..
I remember the tuning fad from the 80s- petrol stattion selling stripes with name son them "dave Tracey..." etc. And have a look at this Corvette from an early episode of Minder:

You'd never see a car like that these days. Mores the pity
(and I guess that in 20 yars time, a film made about the 90s/00s wont have any chavved up shopping cars as they wont survive in that state either)

The inspector Morse series didnt begin until the late 1980s! I think you were watching the Sweeney, though that didnt start until the mid 1970s? unless it was a one off....I missed a fair bit, inc the begining. Yes, something like that. London ran out of pre-suffix numbers so had to move on to the new system. I think it wasn't until the 'B' year started that it became countrywide. Your comments about the DVLC surprise me - not.Weren't A suffix plates only issued in London in period, (ie 1964) but then issued retrospectively by other offices to cars that were re-registered?

Wiliamp, Whch Minder Episode and is it on you tube , or DVD ?
Love that Stingray , it looks like a 69 , T Top , Big Block 427CU if the Hood is the Original . It apears to have Appliance Mags , and looks vaguely similar to Night Hawk a Custom Painted 69 427 CU car . Do you have the Reg No ?

The program was called "Endeavour" and was set in the period when Morse first joined the force, Endeavour being his christian name.neutral 3 said:

I believe they borrowed the original "Morse" Mk2 from it's current owner for the cameo appearance in "Endevour".Seatbelts and a Webasto on a police Mk1 Jag?

Morse Jag reg plate 248 RPA, nice touch I felt seeing it on the foreourt
<Radio Times>Another nod to the original series was that the woman in the newspaper office is John Thaw's daughter, so when Morse was about to leave and she said something about recognising him there was a bit of a timeslip twist.</RT>
It's quite common for the wrong regs to be on cars on TV/film, how many SK/SU/SV numbers appear! I know they did exist in the 60s but not in england in the quantity that they show up on TV.
