Video editing + external mic on GoPro HD

I have a GoPro HD Hero and a Hero2 to do some filming for track days etc. didn't need two of them but fancied wasting some time editing video just as something to do. Can anyone recommend some software that doesn't cost the earth for editing sound and video from the H2 with video from the H1? Picture within a picture etc ideally!

On the subject of sound, it isn't brilliant so I was going to fit an external (to the camera - still inside the car) mic. Can anyone recommend anything?

I don't know if it would work with a GoPro but I use one on these with my VIO POV HD

I'm in a similar position and will be experimenting with my GoPro2 to see what the best setup is in-car and on the motorbike specifically for audio.

From searching the net I’ve found these video editors:

Apple Final Cut Pro X
Sony Vegas Pro 11
Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5

The Zoom H1 and H2 are decent sound recorders and should be better than plugging an external mic in to the GoPro2. The only catch is that you need decent software to match the audio recording to the GoPro video…

People on the GoPro forum seem go for standalone sound. I don't really want to be trying to mix it in though. Need to see what the onboard mic on the Hero2 is like. I hold out some hope that it's better than the Hero1!
