Tooth 'plating' & whitening - good or bad experiences?

I smacked in one of my front teeth when I was a kid. It 'died' and has discoloured, but has stabilised. I want to cover it over with a plate and have the rest of my teeth whitened so that it all matches (I'm addicted to endless big cups of tea!).

Has anyone had any good or bad experiences with doing anything similar?
