I'm sure this has been done but the search function isn't working.
I am going snowboarding in a few weeks and as much as I want to take my 7d, I cant justify it with all the luggage and my minimal ability to stay on my board so I am looking for a comapact. I want it sub £200 and as manual as I can get. I started looking at a Canon G9 or G10 which sort of ticks the boxes. Is there anything else I should be looking at?

I recently acquired an S90 (refurb but looks new) and it seems to be excellent. Not too much less spec than the S95 iirc.Thinking about gloves .... although some of the controls can be fiddly, as you would expect given the size, it does have the advantage of a function ring around the lens to which can be assigned different settings functions related to the currently selected mode. Not tried it with gloves on but it occurs to me that it may well have some benefits.
So with a function ring around the lens and another wheel on the back (rather than tiny push buttons) it may offer some advantages. Sturdy build too.
Been very impressed with my S95 bought on the advice of GetCarter amongst others. Controls are a little fiddly though; the mode wheel in particular is hard to turn, but it has the multifunction wheel and a programmable button to help.
The jury's still out on longevity (my previous gripe with Canon compacts) but it seems reasonably robust so far.

Just a thought here.I have some 'Carpenter's Gloves' that leave hald the thumbs and half of 2 fingers uncovered. Bought them with using a camere in mind since the pukka photographer gloves I also have are great but not absolutely ideal for messing with the controls in all cases.
Now, the cut-off finger gloves are not going to be good for snow sports gloves BUT I seem to recall that you can get some light thermal versions for wearing under full gloves that give some protection if you slip a full glove off to do something fiddly. If you can get such a 'lining' type of glove they might prove useful in a number of situations. Or just get a thermal lining and cut the ends of a few digits but you may need to do soething to stop the ends fraying.

Warehouse express have had both black and silver S100's for sale for a few weeks now I think. Out of interest would these be proper uk models do you think, or will they be grey imports? TomE said:

Certain outlets may have been favoured in the supply chain. It's not unusual for one or two of the larger clients to have early stock shipment availability whilst the product can attract a price close to or at RRP.
I very much doubt that WEX or Jacobs would be selling grey imports.
