JOHN COBB LAND SPEED RECORD ITEM 1947
Discussion
Hello folks,
I just wondered if anyone on this forum had knowledge for John Cobb and his land speed record attempts?
The reason I ask is I have recently stumbled across a very unusual Land Speed Record item and would love to know a little bit more about it, so my post on the forum is a bit of a long shot.
So what is the item in question?...........It is a postal cover (post stamped envelope) , nothing very unusal about that, BUT, this postal cover has the following details printed on it.
It reads " WORLDS FASTEST LAND MAIL" John Cobb speeds 403.135mph. It has John Cobb's signature in ink and below this is reads "Carried by John Cobb on the record run"
Also on the cover it has an emblem that shows the car at speed with the words "RAILTON MOBIL SPECIAL...AAA.....BONNEVILLE SALT FLATS.
Below this is stuck a small photo showing the car passing the timing traps.
The postage stamp reads....salt lake city utah, Sep 16 10pm 1947 Wendover Field.
The envelope has spotting with age and the John Cobb signature appears to be correct, the envelope looks had made.I will try and post an image shortly for you to see.
I would love to know something more about this item and I can only think it would have been carried under the driving seat due to space on board and made in very small numbers.
Any thoughts or info would be just great.

Nice find and a lovely piece of history . Looks like it could have been caried on board .
Can only suggest reading any books and Articles on the great man , and this run . The Once Great Motor Sport Magazine Could well be a great place to start, their coverage of such events was Allways second to none .

A legend at Brooklands too, and the Napier Railton he drove, this car is still around and on display at Brooklands, it's massive in person.

I'm sure Brooklands would interested in that card!

Many thanks for the comments and helpful ideas on where I might find further info on this item. I plan to keep this item so sorry to say its not for sale at this time but I would like to find somewhere (like Brooklands Campbell Sheds) to display it as I think it would be fitting to have such a rare piece of LSR/John Cobb on display with other historical items inked to the great and humble man. I have a feeling the Campbell sheds have a display of other John Cobb items? but not sure if I have my fact correct ( part of K6 Crusader Jet Boat?)
