I have an opportunity to leave my current job and take on another role somewhere else.
I currently live about 20 minutes away from where I work, I enjoy the job, I like the people I work with, even my boss is a great guy, even the hours are great. I’ve been given the opportunity of working somewhere that’s 40 minutes away with a promotion and £1500 more than what I am on now.
The advice I’m after is do I leave somewhere I’m happy at for a better position and £1500 (I know the breakdown of £1500 before tax and after tax, plus how much it works out monthly, weekly and hourly)
Any advice would be great.

I have a history of leaving jobs I love. Loving a job is safe, secure and feels great but changing jobs should be about personal growth and staying with a company that you like doesn't always achieve this.
I did the same as you about 5 years ago but took a pay cut of about £5k to drive an extra 2 hours a day (so an £8k drop with petrol etc). Sounds insane but it was done with a relatively clear vision and prospect of improving my position in the long term. I've now made up that loss (and some) so it has paid off but you need to make sure it will be the same for you.
People change jobs mainly out of dissatisfaction but I think it's better to make the growth choice than one in anger.

£1500? You wouldn't notice it. After tax that's possible £900 for double the travelling time (assuming no extra hold ups).
The caveat is that if you work there for a year, could you then move on and get a better promotion with maybe £8-10k more?

ive taken a job i love for less money!
the benfits are much better, and in my eyes its not all about the money, i now have access to a whole lot more than i used to in my previous job, and save the money that way, as im not paying out for things i used to have to pay out for.
by the sounds of it though, u seem like your going to do it anyway! if its a good show on your CV, and ur chances of being promoted are higher, then go for it!
lets just hope the new boss isnt a cock

I am in the same situation and have decided to join a new company on 15k raise though i love my current job and the people i am working with.

- This job is Paying good money and benefits and if i come back to north in 2-3 years time on this same salary or little less then i will much better off then living in south becuase of living cost.
- People are nice in this company and work enviorment is also good.
It is not really easy to leave the job where you very comfortable, it took me ages to make up my mind about leaving my current job. I had 6-7 offers this year but none of them was upto my expectations.
Weight up pros and cons and then make a final decision. Do alot of research on the new company and talk to the people who have recenly left this company.

i love driving the trucks on the music stuff, but a tour could see me away anywhere from a week, too, 4 months at a time. sadly, a couple of family members are quite ill, so i just can't be on the road for these periods in one go. so, what to do, the only thing i've ever been half good at is driving for a living, but general haulage in the uk does not appeal anymore.
anybody need a chauffeur?

currently waiting to hear on another job, same money but closer to home, at the moment i do 60 miles round trip. Am at the top of the ladder where i am at the moment, or thou have been told there will be some restructering in the new year it will not effect my role, if anything it will probably give me more to do than i am now, and id like to put money on no wage rise.
Been told good chance ill get to interview stage at other job but not sure of long term prospects at to moving up the ladder etc. and if theres no chance of moving up the ladder ill stay where i am.

I left a job this time last year for a £1500 pay rise but went down a position on the food chain. Basicly I was traveling 70 miles a day and was spending most of my pay on petrol. I don't regret that move as I now have a chance to see my family and friends.

I enjoy working for/with the team I have but I need to think of myself and my family. The decision is still out as to a yes or no on the job opertunity and for an extra £175 a month I know it's not a huge amount now but in the future it may well be more. I'm also not getting any younger and in the last two years ive moved jobs twice so I need to find something that's going to keep me happy for atleast the next two to three years so my cv doesn't become to long and boring with all the moves on it.

First thing I would want to know is what are your prospects for promotion and pay rise in the current role?
Good hours, a short commute and people you get on with count for a lot. I wouldn't recommend you use the offer as a bargaining chip to seek a counter-offer, but you should weigh up the two with all the information available.

I left my old job earlier this year, for a 40% rise. I was on the cusp of promotion when I left and the counter-offer (including promotion) to stay at my former employer closed the gap to the tune of about 25% but my mind was made up by then. If the new package on offer had been less (or my previous employer's offer better than the 15%) I would not have moved.
With hindsight, money isn't everything and I should probably not have moved if I think too much about those three important things noted above; you do miss people and the company culture if it is somewhere that you were happy. You also lose the security of a few years service under your belt (if that counts for much these days) plus any benefits that went with service.
Would I make the same choice again? Yes, I probably would given the salary difference but looking forwards to future moves (if any) I would have to weigh up the merits of that specific opportunity first of all. I doubt a 40% increase is going to be put before me again for a few years!
