Ok little bit of a back story to this one. Im currently contracting after the airline I worked for ceased trading back in November (last time I was paid was end of Oct) I managed to land a contract within two weeks with another airline that is a VERY good airline, there is "potential" for me to be made permanent in a few months. Whilst this is a good thing I have heard this said to many people to make them work there arse off for a few months before getting rid of them once work has a dried up.

Anyway during the time I was looking for work I was approached by another company to do a short term contract 5 months down near Bristol (the other contract is up in Luton) but it was on hold and they didnt get back to me till two days ago to say its a go as of the 3rd of Jan. Its £12 an hour More than the Airline in Luton are paying me.

Now Luton Airline were supposed to have another person join the team as of the 3rd of Jan but they have found a different job and wont be joining us. The contract position im in is because a guy retired. so were 2 down on a 6 man team with a hell of alot of work coming up in the new year.

I went to the Luton airline and said look you have lost this guy im contracting because you have lost another guy I have been offered this contract for more money Take me on permanent or im going to go here.

They have come back to me and said Sorry no this is our process we take people on as contractors for a few months then give them perm positions as we dont have a probabtionary period with our perm jobs. (this stinketh of BS) so carry on as you are or go your choice. (calling bluff I believe.

The dilema is Go to Bristol work for 5 months finish work and could come out looking for more work when there are no jobs in my field. Plus points are I can replenish all the savings we have used over the last two months do the bathroom and kitchen and live for about 2 months after the contract finishes whilst looking for more work.

Or

stay with Luton airline, and pray i get made permanent and dont have to say mid feb to Mrs Tiny Sorry the contracts ended. If i get made perm though this airline posted profits this year of nearly 500,000,000 and is not going to be going anywhere for at least 5-10 years & the perm salary is good enough to support me living away and her at home.

So what would you do? Either one means im getting another RX8.

Can you do a double bluff & go for the new role. Processes are there to be bent in times of need.

If I've read it right the Bristol contract will be worth about £8,500 more on a 35 hour week over the five months before tax.

Is that enough of a difference for you to move just for that?

Sounds like you are happy where you are.

Sounds like the Bristol role has more short-term security and money for when the job finishes, so that for me is the better option.

Think I'd take the Bristol job. You'll be getting more money plus making new contacts/networking.

I am happy up here in Luton thats the thing, good digs during the week, great team, im going to get to play with the 787's engines, and i could see myself here for the next 10-20 years no problem.

If were talking purely money here If I worked at Luton for a whole year I would earn only £10k more for 7 months extra work over the 5 month contract.

Mrs Tiny is expecting our 1st which is another issue "Potential" stability Vs. Savings and House almost complete....

Dear TC,

I'm not in your line of work but my 2p is that if a company want you they will ask when a full time post comes up regardless of where you are when it does. If that makes sense smile

Do what you want in the short term, don't be swayed by jam tomorrow promises. Too many times have I been cheated /Yoda

regards,
Jet

OP. My best suggestion is to get on PPRUNE and ask the question in 'terms and endearments'.
