Looking out of the window yesterday, and through the bars I could just about make out the shape of a new Ford Transit SWB! It was at that point I had a brilliant idea, we (the members and owner of this site) need to get together and form a new racing series called The PistonHeads.com Transit Challenge!
Now, before you all right me off as a raving loony, there shall be some modifications made to said transits! But not to the ICE system, well, there will be one mod, It will be dumped!
The intial Van will be a SWB, Low Roof 300 transit (small bricks travel through the air better than big bricks, and big bricks do more damage!)! The engine and transmission shall be dumped, including the front axel, and it will be replaced with a 4x4 system (you have to at least be able to turn corners!) The engine will be replaced with a 10litre V12 and the suspension will be rerplaced with an active air suspension system!!
Full roll cage, quick rack steering and racing seats! etc etc etc!
20 vans on the grid, 1 hour race!

Any objections?

Ever driven a standard transit? 1 hour is more than enough! Where are we racing? Dirt oval as in BRISCA F1, or off road as in those crazy 4x4 things.

SWB transits are hairy when empty. Sideways a few time in the works one. And they noisey as hell from the inside.

Removing the rack and replacing it with a 10 year old one would make it more interesting, especially on the straights

I went to the British Grand Prix in '92 (The days of Mansell and Williams Renault dominance) and Renault as a publicity thing had actually converted an Espace to a 2 seater with a Formula 1 Renault V10 in the back where the other seats normally go!!
Anyone else see/remember it??

I've always thought Ice cream van racing could be a hoot. THe bells have to connected to the speedometer (ie the faster you go the faster the tune) AND you have to sell an ice cream to someone in the pits half-way through the race. I think this would be far more exciting than F1.

I saw caravan racing once.
Destruction Derby cars towing plywood caravans around a speedway track, collapsing and jacknifing - hilarious!

Oh yes, great fun and the various F1 & F3000 powered Ford Supervans that have appearded from time to time.
There have been various mid engined Transits, generally using V12 Jags, trolling around. Always puzzled me as it would make the matress in the back very lumpy and a bit warm.

Yes, I remember they were doing circuit rides for VIPs and it was suprisingly quick. I believe that it was actually an F1 car underneath (suspension, wheels & Tyres, Brakes etc)

I've thought about a mid engined transit as well (except I was thing of an old Ford 427 block and rear wheel drive) be a great laugh to race Not to mention ideal for a booze cruise

How about a warm up feature of fork-lift racing?

Great rallying potential too ... how about ice cream vans racing side by side around Kielder?

Just had a quick look on the net and found a link for Supervan 3 www.ritzsite.net/Masters/demos.htm
now a race with a few of them would be fun.

Wasn't that Supervan 3 only a 7/8 scale transit? [anorak mode off]
