track bike building tips please .. . .

as I am now hooked & booked - just about to pull the trigger on some track bike bits - any comments welcome . . .

Planet X Carbon Track Frame (XS)
Campag - pista chainset, pista tubular wheels, a couple of sprockets & BB
Vittoria SL Tubs + KMC Devil chain + look Keo Pedals (already have these)
Evo Stealth bars - already have these + a Selle San Marco Rolls Saddle - very comfortable

The track you are regularly riding will dictate what tubs. Is it wood or concrete or tarmac, indoor or outdoor?

I ran Vittoria tubs with breaker bar at Welwyn track league last year (outdoor, tarmac) for the first half of the year then moved over to Continental TT's (had to use alot of glue at 19mm to make sure they stayed stuck). The Continental's were faster but cost twice the price, haven't worn out gripped well but the rear tyre is now junk as it has a big cut in it. The Vittoria back tub was wearing out after about 6 evenings racing but was half the price of the Conti's. If I was wood/indoors it would be the Conti's everytime, outdoors it might be a different choice.

I run a KMC "sided" chain (ie can only run one way round) it has been smooth, strong and quiet.

Have seen Planet X bikes on track, aggressively styled I have never ridden one. If you are buying a track frame only not a complete bike then I personally would buy a Dolan, it's what they do, and do well without spending a fortune. Both Planet X and Dolan will be alot cheaper than the "big" name frame. I have seen people win on both of them.

Saddle - as small and narrow and light as possible - not sure a Rolls is this? You won't be in the saddle that long, when you are you will be flat out sitting on the front rivet (or should be anyway)

i would go for a dolan too, they have 30+ years experience nad half the current GB team ride them

there are a lot of giant omniums at newport, there might even be something in the track dictating the preferred frame (stiffness etc) or someone in s.wales might just do them cheap!

If the tub is still on the rim and holding air, clean with a damp cloth all around first and then deflate the tyre. Open the cut and stick some superglue in there. Pump the tyre back up to max pressure and leave it for a while. After it has stuck give the tyre a coating of liquid latex from a hobby shop (or a fetish shop if you wish)

Wheels next, factory or hand built???

definately go to your local track and see what people recommend then speak to a wheel builder. wheels take a massive pounding on a track so you want something that is easily repaired.

Dolan Forza - because I could and he obviously knows how to build a top track frame!!!
