Ibuprofen... beware.

My best friend of 25 years died yesterday morning.
It would appear that he has been taking Ibuprofen for various ailments and often over and above correct dose/ on an empty stomach.
Not saying that the drug should be banned etc, that would be stupid, but "Always read the labed" is something I shall take heed of now.

I'd second this! I took a derivitive of Ibrophen - diclofenac for back pain.
I ended up with an stomach ulcer that 'bled out' which was visible in vomit/faeces....
After going to A&E I was told that it could have 'bled out' extreemly quickly resulting in premature death....
That's the last time I've taken it!
Although to be honest I did take it on an empty stomach various times and did have a painful stomach for a week or so prior to the bleeding but just took more diclofenac for the pain! Foolishly.....

Don't see the problem with ibuprofen etc. Obviously(!), you're supposed to read the label and, really, if you have on-going pain of some sort rather than self-medicating, seek professional help.

Ibuprofen is actually a incredibly safe drug, which is why you can buy it anywhere.
Abuse of any drug will result in negative effects to the persons health, the problem isn't Ibuprofen, its the abuse of it.
That aside, I'm sorry to hear about your loss.
Ibuprofen is an NSAID (non steroidal anti inflamatory drug) as a class of drugs ripping up stomachs is a side effect if dosed incorrectly or even correctly.Ibuprofen is considered one of the safer ones and diclofenac whilst more effective can give real gastric side effects.
The public is being sold ibuprofen as a safe simple painkiller,but for simple pain we are better off with paracetamol no more than 8 x 500mg daily and even then you risk your liver to some extent.

Part of the problem is many different products contain ibuprofen/aspirin/paracetamol/etc - cold/flu remedies especially. I know several people who will have ibuprofen 'proper' and combine with beechams/lemsip/etc and just don't realise how dangerous these cocktails can be, especially over time.

I've nearly made this mistake when I had man flu. Bit scary really!Sorry for your loss.
Ibuprofen is safe to take in combination with paracetamol. Most Lemsip type drinks are paracetamol and phenylephrine, perhaps with caffeine. Read the labels and be aware of what you are taking.
Ibuprofen can cause bleeding from the stomach, but so can aspirin - no reason not to use them, every reason to be aware of the risks and act accordingly.
Didn't realise that diclofenac was available OTC until I recently saw a TV advert for Voltarol - I seem to remember that when I had diclofenac from the doctor, the patient data sheet was moderately scary.
