It's always horrible when an accident happens. frown Midair's always hit home with me though due to my close call back in 2008.
So sorry for the pilot who died today and my sympathy to the family. R.I.P.

I learned to fly there, many years ago, care of an RAF Flying Scholarship. It's awful that anyone died, of course, but I do hope it's no-one I knew.

I don't really like talking about it much in a public forum.. but a general overview - was diverting around a thunder shower, as were others, and we were passing a rather large visual way point. Just before I was about to turn and change course for the next way point another aircraft came towards us (obviously using the same visual reference point) We descended quickly and all was well.
Thats just a very brief outline, I generally don't give detail of it on a forum because alot of people often either will give an 'armchair expert opinion' or just generally lack understanding.

haha smile Im just usually cautious because quite often some people make comments (not on here) and have no real knowledge of the subject at hand.

I can see the airfield from my house, it's a mile up the road. I love watching the planes, chinnoks, Apache, Vulcan and everything else that turns up there. Thoughts are with the family.

That seems like a loaded question?

VRPs can definitely present an increased risk of near misses (or near accidents). Tend to agree with current advice to regard the 'R' as a 'Reporting' rather than 'Reference' point - and not to fly directly overhead. Some blame the increased use of GPS, where we navigate by flying from VRP to VRP.

There are various TCAS systems that can be retro-fitted at low cost, and Transair seem to have a new one advertised in their catalogue. But, of course, in close proximity to an airfield, it's indicating all the time, so tends to get ignored.

Geneve, sorry, I addmit to my mistake, when I said reference point, I meant way point as it wasnt near an aerodrome that my situation occured. It was a large mass of water. smile I've never navigated by GPS before but I do feel that alot of pilots in recent years have become too dependant on them.

That's sad. You'd think most people would want to hear examples like this so they can learn from it. confused

I'm always surprised anyone walks away from a mid-air collision TBH.

Do many light air-craft have those rocket chutes fitted these days? The MR team I was in had a briefing on them a couple of years ago with respect to the risk to a rescuer if they haven't deployed. I always thought they seemed a good idea in a second chance way.

SimoneJ,
Theres alot of armchair experts nowadays - They read a few forums, watch a few youtube vids and they think they have their CPL/IR, ATPL, Instructors rating and work part time as an air accidents investigation branch worker.
Thats why normally when I talk about it, its normally with either friends or other pilots (that normally have had their own close calls so don't pass judgement)

With regards to Chutes, I think that Cirrus aircraft use them but then the aircraft has to be written off afterwards.

I think some microlights have been fitted with emergency descent chutes.

yes, you get an extra weight allowance ~5% if you have a BRS fitted. I think some craft such as the Ikarus C42 now come with them as standard.
