Skiing advise this week in Scotland
Discussion
I just put up a poll on the Holidays/ Travel Forum, but it should have been here I think!

If you have an opinion, your vote would be appreciated
I'm heading up this week, and will be again a few times over the coming months. Always happy to pick up other PH'ers who want a lift up in comfort in the Jeep.

Heard an interview on the radio with the manager at Glencoe on Friday evening, saying that they were open before January for the first time in years, (maybe ever) due to the quality and amount of snow they had, lots of fresh wind blown powder, everywhere.
I also drove through Glenshee on Friday evening and they had plenty of snow and the machines were out grooming the pistes. I suspect The other areas have a good cover also, so the amount or quality wont be that much different between the 'resorts'.
So if Glencoe is nearest for you I'd probably just go there, but I'm no expert and haven't been ski-ing or boarding for a few years.

glenshee, glencoe, Lecht etc are all on facebook and update most hours thats how we plan our trips
I'm watching them all on FB. Snow looks good everywhere too. I'm really trying to tell where is best suited for an easy first day on the slopes. I could ski fairly well 10 years ago when I worked as a patroller/ lift spinner back in NZ, but don't want to be heading straight for the red/ black runs after being out of the game for a while. Last season I spent most of my time messing around with the family on green/ blue runs...

Glencoe is good for about a day tops, provided you're good enough off piste to explore the hill. They've only got a handful of pistes, if you can call them that. Lovely, twee, very friendly resort and cheap to eat there but limited skiing. Anoch mor / nevis range is another 45 mins drive north. Much newer, better equipped but souless place. We often do a good day in glencoe and stay in the clachaig or kingshouse and then do nevis range the following day.
Glenshee is ok for a day or 2 if it's all open. Just a bit remote that's all but often gets v good snow. Haven't done aviemore for years, but remember huge queues.
I was up glencoe on friday and nevis range yesterday with missus - snow is absolutely brilliant there at the moment.
Scottish skiing is colder than alp skiing. You will need decent kit and good face / neck protection.

Getting a pretty solid base now - it'll be brilliant if there's fresh stuff on top of it. Just a wee reminder - they don't have perfectly groomed pistes here, apart from the greens. They do tend to be a bit lumpy, which means you have to adjust your stance accordingly. I tend to ski a bit like john wayne up at glencoe!
Enjoy! Nevis range was absolutely fantastic on Sunday.

Had my first taste of Scottish snow this weekend. Was absolutely brilliant. Went to the cairngorms and have to say the slopes were great. I'm trying just hand at boarding and I love it. Took a few good falls on the Saturday but by Sunday I was linking turns
Shoulder is still agony and arse cheeks are tender but it was worth it. Cannot wait to go back. Looking at getting my own lot as it is quite expensive to hire.

having your own stuff is better for the time it saves when you arive and when you want to leave
