OK - FOLKS - perhaps the mods will kill this one ,but I'm prepared to give it a go .
Plenty of folks are looking for a small dog - a lot are lookng at Westies . But way back in time ,there was a fore runner - the Cairn Terrier - looks like a Westie , behaves like a Westie (but not white), but it's a lot more intelligent , more loving and more faithfull . My first one was a present from my aunt -and my memories of him was such that on retirement ,I went out an foun one that could replace him - an eight year old dog - don't forget that these dogs canlive to 16 -18 -so at my age ,he might out last me . He's a lively ,now ten yer old - but most folks( vet incuded) reckon he's half his age .
So ,if you want to look at a small dog - try a look at Cairn Terrier Rescue -sometimes no dogs , other times plenty - but a Cairn is a adaptle little bloke - he only needs a lot of love(especially if he /she has been neglected ) - then you've got a dog for life - and they do make excellent property gaurd dogs - in my case a cat anywhere my gates of 20 ft from door gets a response .

Blantantly plug away for me. I love cairns and Iam currently sat here with my current two little monsters, Bert and Ernie. They are a great breed of dog, Independant yet loving, great guard dogs and yet happy to cuddle up on your lap.
Have had two others, Hamish and Ben, who are both now in doggy heaven and would not be without them. After Hamish passed on it took me a few months but I eventually caved and got the current two as pups. Hamish came from Cairn Terrier Relief Fund when he was almost three. Would love another but think three may be one too many for me.

Mine is a dark larger version ,with floppy ears .

Tempted to put up warning notice, with photo -"Danger Cairn Terrier on Guard - these dogs don't goe for arms /throat - but lower down "
Strangely enough , after we had someone try to break into our shed, but only force in the perspex window , he had a good sniff out back .Next day ,he went mad around two local youths . Co-incidence -I don't think so - these ain't stupid dogs .They're very intelligent and wise .
And Z4 - they're beauts .Look like they wouln't hurt a fly - but a rat/squirel or a cat trespassing - the instinct comes out .Funny thing is that with other terriers ( Border/Westie/Yorky ,but not Jack Russel ) and a trio of massive GS and their Dacshound pall -mine is great - Greyhounds he likes to chase ( nobody told him that greyhounds chase small prey

Unless you're a breeder or directly involved in Cairn Terrier Rescue, you fire away..
I'm not a breeder -Toby lost that right years ago ,thanks to (IMHO) wrong advice - his problem was not hormonal ,but atraining issue ,which I've adressed .
I'm not involved in Cairn Terrier Rescue(except as a fan /very staunch suporter) - I'm only advocating that if folks get dogs they
look at this site before going to a breeder - give a home to a needy dog , before helping to inflate the profits of a breeder .(Unless the breeder is one of those who makes certain that dog is being well homed)
Mine was a well adjusted dog -not necessarly well trained - but from his performance to date ,a well loved
pet . He adores us -best example is on the setee - wife moves off -he moves to her spot ,then when she returns ,he moves back without being asked to .
Kids - he came into our life aeek after our yongest was born (he was aged 8) -since then ,he's taken to my GS - they play ball togethr -and in the park ,he seeks out kids to fuss over them . He's got his local fan club -
lots of little girls who want to cuddle him =he takes this as his right .
