A work colleague is relocating his family to London. Question is, how long can his wife drive in the UK on a US licence ?
Any helpful info ?( rather than my initial response to him..... )

12 months - after that they are supposed to take a test. In practice, many Americans take a holiday abroad & then their "timer" is reset & they have another 12 months.

cheers,

I thought 12 as well, don't think the holiday reset will work for her though as they will have residence status here. Thanks.

EU licences are valid here as we are all now one big happy family......

Many people don't do the UK test (just like many Europeans don't reregister their cars here - naughty, how dare they avoid speed cameras when I can't ). However, when it comes to insuring your own car the UK license thing becomes necessary (I don't think compulsory though). My girlfriend has a US license and a UK license now ... she conveniently forgot to hand back the US one.

So, when she got stopped recently which license did she hand over? The UK one ... she's now got 3 points.
Still at least it's given her a nice level of contempt for the Surrey Traffic Police.

They can drive on their EU Driving licence forever but not the other way round! A Brit in Germany (contrary to all EU law) has to get his german driving licence (GB translated) and carry that around. Just one more instance where GB applied EU law and the others deliberately ignore it!
