Classic Mercedes 190SL advice needed

Hello all,

Sadly (for my wallet) my dream car has just come up for sale at a local dealer. The dealer is not a classic dealer by any means, far from it in fact...

Anyway, the car: 1958 Mercedes 190SL

This in not the exact car but identical colour/leather...



So, a few questions:

Firstly has anyone had one or knows someone who has?

Secondly has anyone got an idea on values? The car does have a screen price (that I dont want to mention!) but it is not A1. The paintwork is only about 80%, some of the chrome is coming away slightly around the grille and there has been some silicon work done around the base of the screen which looks shoddy.

I see on carandclassic etc that cars are priced between 55-95k or there abouts but most of those are LHD. This one is RHD and i'm not sure if that makes it more or less desirable given the European market etc.

So, any pointers on these cars from anyone?

Wonder what the Coys one made, auction was last week...

The PH car is a beauty. Just trying to work out why Coys valued at c.40k and PH car is 76...

I bought one last year for my wife and they are spectacularly pretty things. However they are pretty underwhelming to drive. I find it very underpowered and wallowy in corners.

Concours cars can cost up to GBP 110k, although for these cars that probably still wouldn't cover the restoration costs.

A lot of the cars have had the Solex carbs changed as they can be a bit tricky to start from cold, ours have the originals.

I'm not sure there's a premium for RHD cars although they are much more hard to find.

Thanks, not bothered about speed, just the looks and ride really plus I've coveted them since being a boy.

These twin solexes seem to be the main gripe as you say, am going for a look/drive tomorrow so will have a good root around and see what's what.

I had one a few years ago. Loved it but found the following >

Gearbox was terrible
Carbs were a nightmare to set and keep set up
