FIA GT: Croydon Halted
Ferrari broke before he got to drive
Rob Croydon was due to make his FIA GT race debut last weekend in Round 6 of the championship at Donington Park, Derbyshire, UK. Unfortunately he didn’t have the chance to drive during the 3 hour race because his Wieth Racing Ferrari F550 broke a drive shaft after 1.5 hours.
This was to be the Kent based driver’s highest profile race of the season to date. The FIA series boasts a global audience and the world’s best GT drivers regularly compete for top professional teams.
Rob commented “I only got the call up on Thursday night before Friday’s free practice session. I was disappointed not to race but my plan is definitely to take in more FIA GT events. We set a good pace in testing but had both our qualifying times disqualified for a ride-height infringement”.
32,000 spectators attended the race day on Sunday, and were treated to a spectacle of the world’s best GT racing in glorious sunshine.
The German team’s Ferrari started dead last but opening driver Mark Mayall made quick work of the slower N-GT category cars to move into a respectable position before handing over to team mate Wolfgang Kaufmann. Shortly afterwards the German driver was forced to park the F550 at the end of the start straight with the broken driveshaft ending the team’s day before Rob had the chance to drive.
“Despite not driving in the race the whole weekend was a great experience. I have been invited by Wieth Racing to do the Spa-Francorchamps test as a prelude to the 24 hours race in August, so I guess they must have been happy with my effort and driving. I will also be driving for RSR in their TVR Tuscan-R in the remainder of the British GT season for which I am very happy”.
