High Performance Tuition
Discussion
I've been thinking about doing one of those High Performance driving courses.
Does anyone have any recommendations??
I'm looking for something that will teach me better high performance car control etc.
I like to think I'm a pretty safe driver, but I guess there is always something to learn.
Also an idea of cost and location would be appreciated.
Cheers Dan

Dan,
I'm doing a 'Creative Car Control' course with Don Palmer in a few weeks so I'll let you know what I think. Although Don will teach you how to power slide or numerous other 'not very useful in the real world but fun all the same' techniques he will also assist in sorting out any specific driving things that you want - you just need to tell him what you want out of the day. The day isn't cheap (was pressie) at around £400 but hopefully it will be worth it.
Others have done courses with Don and seemed happy and there have been a few previous threads about other performance driving instruction in the past.

I'd recommend the course. Don is a stunning driver - you'll have a blast and learn a lot.
Bruntingthorpe is pretty gritty... so be warned if you ask to improve your speed driving and handling, you will trash your tyres (I got through 5 in one day... yes 5!) also most of a set of pads.
Here is a 1.2 mb Windoze media vid of my time with Don. It's bit pants... but will give anyone interested an idea why you'll need new tyres!
www.stevecarter.com/M3trash.WMV (I'd right click and 'save target as' if I were you)

Me too Dan - I've found this www.drivetrain.uk.com/performance.htm (Drivetrain) anyone tried them? They appear to be more for fast road techniques rather than track.
It's also worth deciding what your objectives are.
Do you want to:
a) Drive quickly on track, or
b) Drive a fast car safely on the queen's highway (i.e. staying ON the highway and avoiding contact with those of us who think we are doing (a)! )
As has been discussed here extensively (!), there is a small overlap between these two, but most of the skills are completely different. Too many courses I have seen advertised/mentioned seem to offer an ill-defined "Driving God" qualification that claim to make you great at both.

Blimey Great response... Thanks Guys.
I really do fancy the Don Palmer course, but for the time being 400gbp is a bit more than I (or my wife as it's me birfday pressie) was thinking of spending.
I think I'm probably going to do the Ride-Drive, as for the main part I'd like to improve my road driving.
I'll let you know how I get on.
Cheers Dan
