"Following a meeting of the Scottish cabinet on Wednesday evening, local authorities were advised that all schools in the west of the central belt should be closed on Thursday, with schools in the east closed from lunchtime.

It had earlier been confirmed that schools would close from lunchtime in the Borders, Renfrewshire and Stirling Council areas."

Pffft...

And yet other than the schools, I haven't heard any broadcast warnings about "don't travel unless really necessary" "be prepared for power cuts" "there may be some disruption to..." "the end of the world as we know it..."

Isn't this a case of "Damned if you do... damned if you don't"?

Imagine the headlines if just one child got injured at school due to the storm...

I think the schools should be open and don't understand how kids can't get to school. This view is not shared by most of my office (who all have kids aged 0 - 10ish) who all think it's dangerous for them to go out in wind.

I bet they are happy enough to let their kids go skiing when they are a bit older, play dangerous sports and get a car at 17. How many kids have ever been killed by wind?

Wind is certainly picking up in Edinburgh just now. Just back in from Makro at sighthill and there is stuff blowing about everywhere in the estate. Drove by the Arnold Clark motorstore and not a soul there. Won't sell many cars today I'd imagine.

The problem with closing the schools is what do you do with the kids if you are working and have no one to look after them. You either have to take the day off or if your boss is half decent he'll let you bring them in and not many companies will allow that now due to 'insurance and health and saftey' reasons. Surely keeping the school open is a better option, after all, after any natural disaster in the world the School hall is always where many people end up. May as well get ahead of the game and get themn in there just now!!

Bit mental down on the Ayrshire coast. Roads starting to close and seas over 7m already. Should be a laugh going back to Glasgow later!

Forth road bridge closed now and the kids have just arrived back from school sporting the "windswept and interesting" look. Cetainly a bit blowy here in Dunfermline and the other half is asking if we should be boarding up the windows. Being fair, given it's a Redrow house, think the windows are the least of our worries!

Is this really such an exceptional weather event that we should all be hunkering down in the cellar with emergency supplies, or it is just that, after the M8 'issues' last year, everyone in authority is suffering from an excess of caution?

Don't travel? Don't go outside? It's just a bit windy, surely? I've got a plane to catch today, and if it takes off I'll be on it!

We hit 55mph winds this morning in Stirling, averaging around 30 though.

Public transport is pretty much stopping at 2pm.

We're all getting sent home from the financial district.

I'm in Dunfermline too - wife just back from school (no, not a pupil) biggrin where they had a fire alarm due to lead flashing being nicked from roof and wind/rain getting in. Now she's looking at the caravan in the drive worrying it will blow over. FFS!

Our school text the parents to tell them the school was closed today. Only problem was they sent it at 08:58 this morning when I was parked outside the locked gates.

im pretty sure a child gets injured at a school somewhere everyday! so by their logic schools should shut everyday.

its a blooming joke!
