Planning on taking my wife to New York City next Autumn as a surprise 30th birthday present. Going with our best mates and was looking at renting an apartment as a low cost option of accomodation.

BUT, been reading that this is illegal if you do not stay for at least 30 days? Is this true and do people abide by it? Rental websites are full of apartments to rent in Manhattan etc.

Has anyone done this recently and ended up in court?

For vacation rentals try Craigslist - http://newyork.craigslist.org/vac/

30 day minumum sounds a bit odd IMHO.

You would be better off with vacation rentals or service apartments. Something like -

It's certainly possible to do - my parents did a while back. They ended up in the Radio City Apartments - http://www.radiocityapartments.com/

Did it in LA a few years back, thanks to a PHer pointing me in the right direction. $100 a night for what can only be described as a spacious 2 bed apartment!

30 days is not required in NYC. My guess is that someone has seen short term corporate apartments which would have that requirement.

Another resource to look at is vrbo.com. I haven't looked at NYC but they have been helpful elsewhere.

Also. They do have some interesting places listed,

Not in NYC and I'm sure your wife wouldn't be too impressed if you did rent it when she found out the owner is Pamela Anderson.

I've stayed in one of these before and they're actually not too bad. Nothing like the 'W' or anything, but for a reasonable price, gives you plenty of room, and right next to Times Square.

That would be a great place to stay....great area for going out in the evenings and very easy to get to all parts of town. Walk to Soho, Greenwich etc in 15 mins.
